Best Tips for When you are Towing a Hired Trailer
Submitted by: Linda Janse Van VuurenHiring a trailer is the easiest way to save time and money. It allows you the freedom of organising yourself and whatever it is that you need to move, in a way that best suits your time frame and requirements, and without those hefty moving fees, you can do it all without breaking the bank.
Trailer hire in Pretoria is a popular method used by both private individuals and companies to move things like furniture from one place to the next, Hiring a trailer is also a great option when it comes to packing up items for a trip away.
While trailer hire most definitely gives you the opportunity to be more flexible with the way that you move things around the catch is, of course, that you need to know how to use a trailer.
Trailer Towing Tips
As someone new to towing a trailer, there are a few things to keep in mind so that you have a safe and positive experience. The wrong hitching method or an unexpectedly fast turn can lead to disaster, not just for your trailer and its contents, but also for your vehicle.
You don’t need to be a seasoned professional when it comes to trailer towing, but you do need to have some insight into how to get things going, and it helps to keep a few of these handy tips in mind.
1. Practice
If you are hiring a trailer, it might seem that there is simply no time to practice as you will only have the trailer when you paying for it. But practice doesn’t have to be an extensive undertaking. Even if you get a bit of practice in on the day that you hire your trailer, you will be more confident and have a little experience under your belt before you set out with your precious cargo. When practicing, you will also have the opportunity to correctly hitch the trailer and ensure that you know how it will affect your visibility. You will be in a better position to also see if it has an effect on your blind spots.
2. Go slowly
Having the extra weight on the back of your vehicle can make speeding a very real hazard. Driving wildly over the limit can cause your trailer to dangerously veer this way and that, causing you to lose control over your vehicle and possibly become involved in an accident. You should always take it easy when both accelerating and breaking, giving you enough time to safely get to where you need to be.
3. Leave room
Making sure that you leave space between your vehicle and the one in front of you is the only way to ensure that when you need to slow down, you can do so without the weight of the trailer having any effect on your vehicle. The additional weight of the trailer can make breaking and coming to a stop more difficult than it would be without the trailer, so having that extra space will keep everyone safe while on the road.
4. Leave the road
When you are feeling nervous on the road or if you feel the trailer is not behaving in a way that you feel comfortable with, it is best to simply pull over and then either check that the trailer is still correctly hitched or simply take a breather to steady your nerves. Make sure that when you pull over your trailer is properly off the road so that it is not a hazard to others.
5. Watch the trailer
While on the road it is important to make sure that you are consistently watching your trailer in the rear view mirror. You should keep a close eye on whether the trailer is still correctly hitched, and to check that whatever it is you are transporting is not lost in transit.
