How to master the Business of Entertainment in 2026
Written by: Martin Myers Save to Instapaper
South Africa’s creative industry professionals, artists, managers, producers and entrepreneurs are being encouraged to actively engage with one of the country’s fastest-growing entertainment business resources — The Business of Entertainment on CapeTalk, hosted weekly by Martin Myers.
Broadcast every Thursday at 9pm and available as a podcast on Spotify under On The Couch With MEX
The series has now surpassed 150 episodes since launching in May 2023, delivering practical, no-nonsense insight into how the entertainment industry actually works.
Music Exchange And Industry Development
The podcast series forms part of the broader vision of Music Exchange — South Africa’s long-running entertainment-economy platform, founded in 2009.
Over the past 15 years, Music Exchange has established itself as the country’s only entertainment-economy-focused conference and professional development platform, connecting creatives with local and global industry leaders across music, film, media, publishing, technology and live events.
From international executives and Grammy winners to music lawyers, publishers and rights organisations, the Business of Entertainment podcast series continues that mission by making industry knowledge directly accessible to creators at every level.
Featured Guests And Industry Conversations
Featured guests have included acclaimed film composer Dr Trevor Jones, former Island Records Managing Director Marc Marot, two-time Grammy winner Wouter Kellerman, Roc Nation Sports International President Michael Yormark, music lawyer Nick Matzukis, SAMRO CEO Annabell Lebethe, and technology analyst Arthur Goldstuck among many others.
Rather than celebrity-driven interviews, the podcast focuses on the mechanics of building sustainable careers in the entertainment economy — unpacking royalties, copyright, publishing, contracts, monetisation, negotiation, management structures, AI, ticketing, radio, global markets and professional mindset.
“The conversations are always focused on being entertaining and inspirational, peppered with true stories, first-person accounts and invaluable tips from the people who've made a successful living from their craft,” says Myers.
Educational Resource For Creatives
Music Exchange is encouraging artists, managers, producers, students and emerging industry professionals to actively use the podcasts as an ongoing educational resource.
Listeners are encouraged to begin with:
Episode 233 – Dr Trevor Jones
Episode 109 – Marc Marot
Episodes 178 & 179 – Nick Matzukis
Episode 229 and 230 - Charles Goldstuck
Episodes 202 & 203 – Annabell Lebethe, CEO of SAMRO
Accessible Industry Knowledge
The message behind the series is simple: knowledge is now accessible. The gatekeepers are speaking publicly, sharing their experiences, systems and mistakes.
Those serious about building long-term careers in the entertainment economy are encouraged to study, apply and engage with the information available.
