Jean Doyle Sculpture Unveiled at Grande Provence
Submitted by: The P.R TeamGrande Provence Heritage Wine Estate, in Franschhoek, part of The Huka Retreats, has proudly unveiled a magnificent life size bull elephant sculpture, Nhlangulene, cast in bronze, by celebrated sculptor Jean Doyle, which takes pride of place and welcomes guests at the entrance to The Tasting Room. The sculpture will help raise funds for the Out of Africa Children’s Foundation. At the event Anton Doyle, Chané de Kock (Mrs South Africa and Patron of Out of Africa), Kim Highfield, Alex van Heeren and Jean Doyle officially unveiled the majestic sculpture. Other patrons of the charity include Archbishop Desmond Tutu and 2009 Idols winner, Sasha Lee Davids.
Guests are welcome to visit the Estate to view this sculpture where a tree stump deposit box has been placed for small change to benefit the Out of Africa Children’s Foundation. The sculpture previously stood at Cape Town International Airport and the V&A Waterfront.
By providing the location for this unique sculpture, Grande Provence Heritage Wine Estate also supports the Out of Africa Children’s Foundation, whichis an NGO that strives to improve the quality of life for children facing life-threatening and terminal illnesses throughout South Africa. Out of Africa Children’s Foundation provides accommodation for the direct families of ill children from out of the Cape Town area during the child's hospitalisation and recovery.
The foundation also provides a safe haven for abandoned and abused children, it supports the needs of the children and their immediate family in the most dignified and compassionate manner.
Nhlangulene was one of the first elephant bulls introduced into the Kruger National Park. He became famous for his immense size, standing 340 cm at shoulder height, his tusk lengths were 317 cm (left) and 305 cm (right). The bull elephant died of natural causes in 1987, aged approximately 55 years.
Jean Doyle has created bronze monumental works since 1980. She has crafted a number of world renowned sculptures that are located all over Africa including monumental works such as Nelson Mandela’s “Long walk to Freedom” situated at the Groot Drakenstein Prison in Paarl.
