Grande Provence Part Of ‘Art In Clay’ Franschhoek Festival
Submitted by: The P.R Team Save to InstapaperOn Friday, 26 October 2013, The Gallery at Grande Provence Heritage Wine Estate, Franschhoek, part of The Huka Retreats, is proud to present an exhibition by Nico Masemola titled ‘Recent ceramic figurines’ along with Grayson Perry’s exhibition titled ‘3 vases on display’, part of the ‘Art in Clay’ Franschhoek Festival, which will run until 26 November 2013. This will be the first exhibition since Trent Read took over the management of The Gallery and therefore marks an important milestone for all concerned.
Nico Masemolo is the young protégé of Hylton Nel and started making ceramics a decade ago. Five years ago he had his debut exhibition and his recent exhibition in New York was a sell out. His work is eagerly sought after by collectors on four continents. His quirky, colourful and quite beautiful figures of people and animals are naive, carefully observed and full of humour and they are addictive in the extreme.
Grayson Perry, winner of the 2003 Turner Prize, uses the seductive qualities of ceramics and other art forms to make stealthy comments about societal injustices and hypocrisies, and to explore a variety of historical and contemporary themes. The beauty of his work is what draws us close. Covered with scraffito drawings, handwritten and stencilled texts, photographic transfers and rich glazes, Perry's detailed pots are deeply alluring. Only when we are up close do we start to absorb narratives that might allude to dark subjects such as environmental disaster or child abuse, and even then the narrative flow can be hard to discern.
