Giving Gets a Head Start with the Santa Shoebox Project at Gateway
Submitted by: Shirley Williams WilliamsFor a child growing up with little of their own, receiving a personalised shoebox full of useful items and treats can be a life-changing experience. The social impact organisation, the Santa Shoebox Project, makes it easy for donors to connect with children through its online platform and well-coordinated delivery network.
Gateway Theatre of Shopping has been a flagship collection point for thousands of these lovingly decorated and filled shoeboxes over the past five years. This year’s collection campaign is underway, and the mall aims to surpass the 2,201 boxes it collected last year.
"We are incredibly proud to partner with the Santa Shoebox Project once again this year," says Ayesha Sewbaran, Marketing Manager at Gateway Theatre of Shopping. "For us, it’s more than just a venue sponsorship – it's about making a meaningful impact in our broader community and including everyone in the magic of the festive season."
Operating for nineteen years, the Santa Shoebox Project works year-round to identify schools and set up mechanisms that ensure donors are matched with children and that these special parcels are delivered on time.
Debbie Zelezniak, CEO of the Santa Shoebox Project, adds, “Donors in Umhlanga are able to pledge support and make a lasting difference in the lives of children in nearby communities. It’s heart-warming to see Gateway play such an essential role in the lives of children in need."
The Santa Shoebox Project has connected over one million children in South Africa with generous donors who have created personalised festive shoeboxes. Donors can pledge via the Santa Shoebox website, where they are matched with children by name, age, and gender, ensuring that the boxes are filled with items specially chosen for them.
Donors are invited to use Gateway’s ‘drop & go’ station at the mall's Info desk until 23 October. The collection campaign will wrap up with a final weekend drive starting on Thursday, 24 October, and closing on Saturday, 26 October at 6 p.m. During this period, the Santa Shoebox collection headquarters will be located next to Woolworths near Entrance 2 and will be open daily from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.
