Local businesses stimulated to supply PPE to Ekurleni Schools to Much needed supplies to the value of R20 Million to be donated to 180 schools
Despite the challenging economic climate caused by COVID-19 Peermont’s Emperors Palace remains invested in the local Ekurhuleni community. Through one of its Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment vehicles, the Infrastructure Fund, Emperors Palace started a roll out a Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) project valued at R20-million to provide 156 Ekurhuleni schools. As part of the initiative the Palace of Dreams did not only keep learners and educators safe by providing masks, shields, gloves, aprons, soap and cleaning materials but also created job opportunities by contracting small businesses and co-operatives in the resort and casino’s catchment area to produce the masks. ‘We are very proud of these local businesses,’ says Emperors Palace Trust Administrator, Makomane Ntabo. ‘It’s during these tough times that we are proud to make a difference, empower local businesses as well as providing protection for our children.’
Among the beneficiaries of the project were:
Dorcas Foundation situated in the Ethafeni Multi-Skill Centre in Tembisa. The organization, run by Sylvia Tshabalala and her team have produced just over 23 000 masks, which have been distributed to schools in Tembisa, Kathorus, Daveyton and Etwatwa.
Masinga Embroideries which was employed to cut out all the materials required for the masks before it was distributed to various other entities to sew the masks. Owners Sipho and Pontsho Masinga and their team have cut out material to produce just under 225 000 masks. Thanks to the project the Tembisa business was also able to expand, employ a further six staff members bringing the staff compliment to 14 and buy a new Dye Sublimation Printer and a Direct Garment Inkjet Printer.
Bulang Mamati Co-operative in Klippoortjie Park worked hand-in-hand with the Revelation Co-operative and Bana Bamohale Co-operative, both in Buhle Park, to produce a staggering 48 976 masks to date.
The Daveyton Association For The Physically Disabled which has to date made 37 313 masks while creating jobs for about 30 of the centre's physically disabled members. Helping these members reach this target was Workshop Supervisor Thabang Sibeko.
