Audiences are invited to step inside the magic of a darkened cinema to watch three of the world's most celebrated cinematic masterpieces on the big screen, with all movie tickets priced at an unbeatable R50 each.

The August curation features a timeless literary adaptation, an epic fantasy conclusion, and a milestone anniversary screening of a beloved magical phenomenon.

August Throwback Cinema Lineup

To Kill a Mockingbird (1962)Revisit the Oscar-winning courtroom drama based on the most loved and widely read Pulitzer Prize-winning novel from author Harper Lee. This cinematic classic, starring Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch, continues to stand as a powerful monument to justice, family, and integrity.

Scout Finch, 6, and her older brother Jem live in sleepy Maycomb, Alabama, spending much of their time with their friend Dill and spying on their reclusive and mysterious neighbour, Boo Radley. When Atticus, their widowed father and a respected lawyer, defends a black man named Tom Robinson against fabricated rape charges, the trial and tangent events expose the children to the evils of racism and stereotyping.

This iconic black-and-white classic, which screens from 07 August for one week, is directed by Robert Mulligan. Alongside Gregory Peck, it stars John Megna, Frank Overton, Brock Peters as Tom Robinson, and Robert Duvall as Boo Radley, with Mary Badham as Scout and Phillip Alford as Jem Finch.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014)The third and final film of The Hobbit trilogy takes its rightful place back on the big screen from 14 August, for two weeks. Cinema audiences are invited to experience Middle-Earth on a grand scale when the final chapter of director Peter Jackson’s trilogy brings the legendary clash of armies, dragons, and heroes to life with fully optimised cinema sound and visuals.

Following Smaug's attack on Laketown, Bilbo and the dwarves try to defend Erebor's mountain of treasure from others who are claiming it: the men of the ruined Laketown and the elves of Mirkwood. Meanwhile an army of Orcs led by Azog the Defiler is marching on Erebor, fuelled by the rise of the dark lord Sauron. Dwarves, elves and men must unite, as the hope for Middle-Earth falls into Bilbo's hands.

The film sees the return of the all-star cast in their iconic roles, including Martin Freema as Bilbo, Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Richard Armitage as Thorin and Cate Blanchett as Galadriel, alongside James Nesbitt, Orlando Bloom, Christopher Lee, Stephen Hunter and Aidan Turner, and the voice of Benedict Cumberbatch as Sauron / Smaug the Dragon.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (25th Anniversary Special Release)Audiences are invited to join Ster-Kinekor in celebrating 25 years of cinematic magic from when the Harry Potter global phenomenon first began. The 25th anniversary screening, from 28 August for two weeks, offers fans the ultimate opportunity to step back into the magical world of Hogwarts, rediscover the Sorting Hat, and relive the spellbinding magic that defined a generation.

Based on J.K. Rowling’s first bestseller in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone introduces audiences to the characters who have become household names for generations to come. Harry Potter has lived under the stairs at his aunt and uncle's house his whole life. But on his 11th birthday, he learns he's a powerful wizard – with a place waiting for him at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. As he learns to harness his newfound powers with the help of the school's kindly headmaster, Harry uncovers the truth about his parents' deaths… and the villain who is to blame (he who must not be named).

The 2001 film is directed by Chris Columbus. The all-star cast includes Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley, and Emma Watson as Hermione Granger, together with Richard Harris as Albus Dumbledore, the late Dame Maggie Smith as Professor McGonagall, Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid, Richard Bremmer, John Hurt, Warwick Davis, Ian Hart, Fiona Shaw and Richard Griffiths.

Connecting generations through great storytelling

The Throwback Cinema initiative is designed to bridge the gap between classic cinema history and modern audiences, offering long-time fans a dose of nostalgia while introducing younger audiences to these masterworks possibly for the very first time.

"There is something incredibly powerful about bringing older, classic titles back to the big screen where they truly belong," says Lynne Wylie, chief marketing officer of Ster-Kinekor Theatres. "We are seeing immense popularity with this promotion because it creates a wonderful opportunity for a new generation of moviegoers. Parents who watched these films when they were their own children's ages can now share the same big-screen magic with their families, passing down the tradition of cinema storytelling to the next generation – and all for the magical movie ticket price of just R50."

Bookings for August’s Throwback Cinema titles are now open. Due to the limited screening runs of these three classic films, seats are expected to fill quickly and moviegoers are encouraged to secure their tickets early.

Throwback Cinema titles are screened at the following Ster-Kinekor sites: Sandton, Mall of Africa, Cedar Square, Eastgate, Cresta and Rosebank Nouveau in Johannesburg; Brooklyn, Irene and The Grove in Tshwane; Vaal in Vanderbijlpark; MooiRiver Mall in Potchefstroom; Watercrest Mall in Waterfall, KZN; Baywest in Gqeberha; Somerset Mall in Somerset West; and Blue Route, V&A Waterfront, and Capegate in Cape Town, giving more movie fans the opportunity to enjoy August’s line-up of classic films.

Tickets for Throwback Cinema movies are only R50, and bookings are now open.
