TITLES LOADING FOR THROWBACK CINEMA IN MAY PROMISE SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

Written by: Janet de Kretser Save to Instapaper

With the first cold spell of winter making itself felt, the perfect way to fend it off is in the warmth of one of Ster-Kinekor’s cinemas, enjoying classic titles and blasts from the past. The Throwback Cinema line-up for May has something for everyone, from balloons and rockets to steamy love scenes, making it perfect viewing to enjoy with your besties, a date night, or special family time at the movies. This month’s line-up has certainly stood the test of time, and all the titles deserve another viewing on the big screen. And, with tickets at the classic price of just R50, what’s not to enjoy?

“Our Throwback Cinema titles, which now each screen for two weeks, are proving to be a very popular way for audiences to enjoy classic films on the big screen again. The May line-up includes some real classics that can be enjoyed again, either as repeat viewing or as a first-time cinema experience,” says Lynne Wylie, chief marketing officer at Ster-Kinekor Theatres.

Playing out for their second week of viewing from 01 May, are UP, screening at all the Throwback Cinema sites, and A Wonderful Life, which is only showing at Rosebank Nouveau.

The coming-of-age animation comedy, Up, releasing for two weeks from 24 April, is perfectly timed around the public holidays, making it ideal cinema viewing. Carl Fredricksen spent his entire life dreaming of exploring the globe and experiencing life to its fullest. But at age 78, life seems to have passed him by, until a twist of fate (and a persistent 8-year-old wilderness explorer named Russell) gives him a new lease on life. First released in 2009, the film is directed by Pete Docter and Bob Peterson, and features the voices of Edward Asner, Jordan Nagai, John Ratzenberger and Christopher Plummer.

In the 1946 classic drama, It’s A Wonderful Life, George Bailey has spent his entire life giving to the people of Bedford Falls. All that prevents rich skinflint Mr. Potter from taking over the entire town is George's modest building and loan company. But on Christmas Eve the business's $8,000 is lost and George's troubles begin. However, it takes an angel sent from heaven to help the desperately frustrated businessman see the value of his own life. Directed by Frank Capra, the film stars James Stewart, Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore, Thomas Mitchell and Beulah Bondi.

Some people think 13 is a lucky number, others disagree – and who knows what the crew of Apollo 13 thought of it as they blasted into space. The dramatic re-enactment of that almost fateful space flight is captured in Apollo 13, screening from Friday 08 May at all the Throwback Cinema sites. The film follows the true story of the technical troubles that scuttled the Apollo 13 lunar mission in 1970. Risking the lives of astronaut Jim Lovell and his crew, the failed journey turned into a thrilling saga of heroism. Drifting more than 200,000 miles from Earth, the astronauts had to work furiously with the ground crew to avert tragedy. Directed by Ron Howard, this 1995 film stars Tom Hanks, Bill Paxton, Kevin Bacon, Ed Harris and Kathleen Quinlan.

Rounding off the titles for May is the third and final film from the Fifty Shades trilogy, based on the books by E.L. James. Fifty Shades Freed releases for two weeks from 22 May and carries a PG16 age restriction. The film picks up when newlyweds Christian and Ana, believing they have left behind the shadowy figures from their past, fully embrace an inextricable connection and a shared life of luxury. But just as she steps into her role as Mrs. Grey and he relaxes into an unfamiliar stability, new threats could jeopardise their happy ending before it even begins. Directed by James Foley, the 2018 film stars Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan in their familiar roles as Ana and Christan, with Eric Johnson as Jack Hyde and also starring Eloise Mumford, Rita Ora and Luke Grimes.
