Making money but still wondering where it all went?

Chartered accountant and entrepreneur Nokuhle Kumalo-Chamoto tackles the money lessons business owners often learn the hard way at Workshop17 West Street this September
You have landed the client, sent the invoice and watched the money come in, but once payday arrives, tax is due, suppliers need settling and someone pays late, that healthy-looking bank balance can start to feel a lot less healthy.
Cash flow has a habit of becoming interesting at precisely the moment it becomes uncomfortable.
On Wednesday, 30 September, chartered accountant, entrepreneur and financial educator Nokuhle Kumalo-Chamoto will tackle the subject at Workshop17 West Street in Sandton during the next instalment of Workshop Wednesday.
Titled “Outsmart Your Cash Flow”, the session will unpack the money lessons business owners often end up learning through experience, sometimes expensively, and show how a better understanding of the numbers can lead to smarter business decisions.
Kumalo-Chamoto, CA(SA), is the founder of Lomaku, an author, speaker and personal finance creator known for making financial concepts easier to understand and apply. Her Workshop Wednesday conversation will bring that same practical approach to entrepreneurship, with a focus on cash flow, commercial trust and building a business that can hold its own when conditions get tougher.
Revenue is only part of the picture
A busy month can feel like a good month. New work comes in, invoices go out and turnover looks encouraging. But turnover cannot pay the bills if the cash is not there when it is needed.
Late-paying customers, tax commitments, rising costs and blurred lines between personal and business spending can put pressure on a company long before the owner realises there is a problem.
“Cash flow can sound technical, but the questions behind it are incredibly practical,” says Penelope Meniere, National Marketing Manager at Workshop17. “Can I afford to hire? Can I take on a bigger contract? How much should I keep aside for tax? What happens if a major client pays late? These are the decisions business owners make every week.”
Kumalo-Chamoto will look at the habits and financial blind spots that can place otherwise promising businesses under strain, while giving entrepreneurs a clearer understanding of what their numbers are telling them.
The session will also explore how financial discipline can affect credibility and opportunity. Businesses that understand their cash position are better placed to plan, negotiate and make commitments with confidence.
The questions founders sometimes avoid
How much money is actually available to spend?
What happens if two customers pay a month late?
Are you paying yourself sensibly, or simply taking money out when it appears?
And do you know the difference between having a profitable business and having cash in the bank?
These are the kinds of questions that can feel less urgent when business is moving, but they become difficult to ignore when the timing of money in and money out starts to tighten.
“Nokuhle has a way of taking financial subjects that can feel intimidating and making them useful,” says Meniere. “That fits Workshop Wednesday perfectly. The point is to create conversations people can take straight back into their work, businesses and everyday lives.”
Smart conversations, useful takeaways
Workshop Wednesday is Workshop17’s monthly speaker series, bringing entrepreneurs, experts, adventurers and other accomplished South Africans into its workspaces for candid, informal conversations.
Previous speakers have included big-wave surfer and adventurer Chris Bertish, filmmaker Greg Lomas, Everest summiteer Angela Yeung and winemaker Rudger van Wyk.
The format is deliberately relaxed. Guests can listen, ask questions and engage directly with speakers whose experiences offer useful lessons beyond their own industries. Since launching in Ballito, the series has expanded to Workshop17 venues in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
For entrepreneurs, freelancers and business owners who would rather understand a cash-flow problem before it becomes a crisis, the September session offers a good place to start.
