Emperors Palace Strengthens Sustainability Drive with Expanded Solar Array

Solar panels now total over 14 000 at The Palace of Dreams Emperors Palace has taken another bold step in its journey toward environmental sustainability by expanding its solar energy infrastructure. Following the successful installation of 13 boreholes and water reservoirs to secure water resources, the Kempton Park mega-resort has added more solar panels as part of a massive green energy project.

‘To date, we have invested nearly R100 million in solar energy initiatives. The initial phases, completed between 2017 and 2019, have already yielded impressive savings, allowing the project to be paid off in full through reduced energy costs,’ says Peermont Maintenance Manager Jannie Roos, who spearheaded the project.

The latest expansion has seen a multitude of new solar panels being installed across the Emperors Palace complex, including the construction of two new 2 500 square metre covered structures to ensure maximum exposure to the sun. The new project provides an additional 2,481 kW of solar capacity, increasing the solar plant’s total peak production capacity to 5,905 kW. This brings the total number of solar panels on the property to an impressive 14,292. ‘These panels are expected to produce up to 9,700,177 kWh annually, significantly reducing reliance on South Africa’s overburdened Eskom grid. To put these savings into perspective, the energy generated by our combined solar plant is equivalent to the annual electricity usage of just over 3000 average-sized homes,’ continues Roos.

South Africa is uniquely positioned to benefit from harnessing solar energy, thanks to its abundant sunlight and growing energy challenges. Solar power offers significant advantages that can address the nation’s energy needs while promoting environmental sustainability. The new solar expansion highlights Emperors Palace's commitment to sustainable practices and reducing its carbon footprint, yet providing an unforgettable experience for guests. By continuing to innovate and invest in green technology, Emperors Palace is setting a benchmark for eco-friendly operations in the hospitality industry, proving that sustainability and success can go hand in hand.
