Mount Edgecombe Becomes Home to Towa's New Head Office
Towa has moved its KwaZulu-Natal head office into larger premises at 9 Fairways Avenue, Mount Edgecombe. The South African company supplies cloud-based point of sale software and hardware to retail and hospitality businesses. The extra space gives the team more room for customer meetings and product demonstrations, and for supporting the shops, restaurants and coffee bars that use its systems every trading day. It is now October, and the final quarter of 2026 is shaping year-end trade. That makes the timing useful for owners who want to watch a new system running in person before their busiest weeks begin.
Towa has deep roots in the province. The business started out as S A Cash Register in 1972, and it opened a Natal company in Glenashley, Durban, early on. Over the years it progressed from mechanical and electronic Towa cash registers to software. It set up its own software department, opened a retail shop in Durban and, more recently, introduced cloud-based platforms for retail and hospitality. Now trading as Towa Data Systems, the company describes itself as one of South Africa's major retail and hospitality software providers.
More room to demonstrate, train and support
Plenty of owners would rather pick a point of sale system after a face-to-face conversation. At Mount Edgecombe, Towa's retail and hospitality specialists now have a larger space to show the software running on real hardware. They can work through what each business needs and answer questions before any installation happens. Demos can be requested on the website, or customers can phone the team directly.
Training remains central to how Towa works. The company runs both in-house and on-location training, and its Nimbus back office software includes staff training on site or off site, whichever suits the customer better. Repairs and maintenance take place on Towa's own premises under the supervision of its technical director, and the company offers a yearly maintenance plan for its POS equipment. The larger head office supports all of this, from workshop repairs to onboarding new clients.
Trading hours at the head office are 8am to 5pm Monday to Thursday, and 8am to 4pm on Fridays.
Stratus: retail software that grows with the business
For retail, Towa's multi-outlet platform is Towa Stratus, which handles retail and inventory management. It is cloud-based, so owners can check on their business from anywhere, and it keeps running offline if the connection goes down. Stratus is built to scale from one store to hundreds.
Its features are shaped around the daily demands of South African retailers. Any till in any store can see debtor balances and purchases in real time. Loyalty programmes run straight from the till, with no need to pay for third-party products. Owners can set up mix and match promotions, such as buy one get one free or a discount on a third item, to keep up with competitors, and the end-of-day report groups promotional sales together. Stratus connects to most financial switches, among them FNB, SBSA, iVeri, Nomad and Transaction Junction, along with Blue Label and Glocell for airtime sales.
Towa names butcheries, supermarkets, bottle stores, pet shops, jewellery shops and fruit and veg stores as some of the business types Stratus serves. Retailers going into the festive season with fresh promotions to run will find that a pos system able to manage specials and stock across branches, without manual workarounds, can make a real difference at the counter.
Fusion for restaurants, bars and coffee shops
Hospitality venues use Towa's Fusion software, which handles order entry, table control, deliveries, inventory and reporting. Each venue can tailor its order entry menus, and the system keeps a customer's previous order history together with the complete product list. Staff can move an order from one table to another in a few taps. Delivery operations can track each driver's sales, delivery charges and commission, and address auto-complete helps reduce capturing errors.
On the stock side, Fusion updates on-hand levels in real time so owners can keep shrinkage and wastage under control. Its reports show best sellers by item, record incoming and outgoing costs from synced sales data, and help managers find where wage costs could be reduced. The Towa site also lists phone and sit-down orders, online ordering, kitchen display screens, order status screens, combos, happy hour pricing, Zapper and EFT integration, table reservations, mobile app ordering and loyalty integration.
New small businesses can start with Fusion Express, a newer package that includes core Fusion functionality with limited stock control options. Towa supports coffee shops, restaurants, fast food outlets, bars, ice cream stores and night clubs, among other venue types.
Nimbus connects every branch
Towa Nimbus Back Office brings everything together. Because it runs in the cloud, owners can manage inventory and sales from any location with an internet connection, Wi-Fi or a mobile hotspot. It works for single sites, multi-site restaurant groups and larger retail organisations, and multi-user accounts allow different levels of security access. Owners can compare branch performance with multi-site business reports, and bigger groups can approach Towa about bespoke development.
Hardware from a partnership dating back to 2009
A pos point of sale system also depends on its hardware. Since 2009, Towa has worked with Senor Tech on all-in-one touch POS terminals that link to printers, scanners, scales, video and menu boards. The broader range covers electronic cash registers, handheld and in-counter barcode scanners, high and medium duty cash drawers, receipt and barcode printers, customer displays, card readers, weighing scales and Hikvision CCTV systems for multi-site shopping areas. Getting all of it from one supplier gives customers a single point of contact whenever something needs attention.
Rental packages to ease start-up costs
For a new store or restaurant, cash flow often decides what is possible. Towa offers its packages on a fixed-cost rental basis from R999 per month, designed for owners with limited start-up cash. Customers who make contact now can also get 10% off the installation fee.
Where to find Towa
As well as the new head office in Mount Edgecombe, Towa has a Cape Town office at North Park, 2 Fir Street, Black River Park, Observatory, and an international office in Eswatini through Swazi Cash Register. One national number reaches all three. Existing customers can log support requests on the Towa support portal.
