The newly formed bargaining council for the civil engineering industry (BCCEI) is gaining ground!
Submitted by: Nicky JoosteThe Bargaining Council for the Civil Engineering Industry (BCCEI) was officially registered on 07th December 2012 after the industry realised a need for centralised bargaining
The BCCEI concluded their first AGM on the 26th June 2013. The bargaining council will negotiate minimum wages, social benefits, conditions of employment, solve labour disputes and make proposals on labour laws and policies. In addition to governmental institutions, such as the Department of Labour, that regulates industrial relations in the Civil Industry, the most important industry regulatory body isthe Bargaining Council for the Civil Engineering Industry (the BCCEI).
The South African Federation of Civil Engineering Contractors (SAFCEC) which represents the employers for the civil engineering industry will work in close collaboration with the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the Building Construction and Allied Workers Union (BCAWU) to standardise conditions of employment and create stability within the industry.
The most important principle regarding the management of the Council is that employers and trade unions have an equal say in the governance of the Council. In practice, this means that the parties to the Council are represented on all Council committees and other structures on a 50/50 basis and that the parties have an equal vote in the running of the affairs of the Council.
The BCCEI stands for Integrity, Fairness and Commitment, and these will be the expected main driving factors when servicing the Industry.
The BCCEI Head Office is situated in Bedfordview.
