Roof Painting - Practical Tips On How To Paint A Roof

Written by: Save to Instapaper

There are number of practical aspects that roof painters need to bear in mind when painting their roofs. When involved in your roof painting task always make sure that you can get down off the roof using the same route you used to climb onto the roof. You need to be able to use this route without walking over the wet paint you have just painted your roof with. All this sounds obvious but many people only realise they didn’t plan their route when they have to walk over paint they have already painted in order to get off their roofs. So plan your routes before you start your roof painting. If you have decided to use the airless spray painting technique instead of the manual hand brush or roller method, you need to make sure that you do not start your painting on a windy day. The reason for not painting on a windy day is that there is always some over spray and it can be carried a long way in windy conditions.

Similarly you don’t want to start your roof painting task and get caught in the middle of the job by a rain storm. Therefore check the weather forecast for the day you intend to paint your roof. There are a number of options when choosing the correct roof paint and colour to paint your roof with. The final choice of colour and quality of paint is obviously up to you and depends on the budget that you have set aside and need to keep to. The type and quality of paint will depend directly on the type of roof you are going to paint. Different paint is needed for a new roof, an old roof, a flat roof, a metal roof, a tile roof, a warehouse roof, a tin roof and so on. Water based roofing paints are best used on cement tiled roofs and shingle roofs, yet there are a variety of roof paints that are not appropriate for roof painting at all. Many people drain their rain water off their roofs into a reservoir for garden and even human consumption.

If you intend doing this with your newly painted roof, make sure that the paint you apply to your roof is safe and does not contaminate the rain water that drains off it into your reservoir. Drinking polluted chemical rain water as a result can cause a number of associated ailments to occur. Make sure that when you buy your paint that you ask the hardware whether that paint is suitable for the collection of rain water. That being said, oil based roofing paints are best suited for collecting rain water. However, do not paint cement tiles with oil based paint. Oil based roofing paints should be used to paint iron roofs, especially if the iron roof or tin roof is rusty as it will help prevent further rust. Water based paints can be used on iron roofs but make sure that any rust or signs of rust is treated correctly before painting or it may appear again soon after painting. If your roof painting budget permits it you should consider purchasing heat resistant paints or buy an additive to mix into your paint. Thermal additives are available and work effectively.
