Granite Carpentry Completes 250 Door Installations Across Gauteng in 2026

JOHANNESBURG, 24 October 2026 - Granite Carpentry & Joinery Experts has completed 250 door installations for Gauteng homes and businesses so far in 2026. Door hanging and installation is now the company’s most requested service, with standard-size door installation priced at R650.

The company installs every type of door, from standard sizes to fully custom, made-to-measure designs. This includes pivot, barn, French, security and solid wood doors. It also covers door alignment repairs, lock and handle replacements, bathroom door replacements and emergency door repairs. To meet demand, Granite Carpentry works with established manufacturing suppliers, including Kparker Joinery, so customers can choose from a wide range of quality doors.

A growing number of calls about badly fitted doors

The company has noticed a pattern in recent months. A growing number of people asking for quotes have already paid another carpenter to hang their doors, and are unhappy with the result. Common complaints include doors that rub or stick, gaps that are uneven, and doors that don’t close or latch properly.

“We keep hearing from clients who hired someone else and are now stuck with doors that don’t fit properly, and they come to us to put it right,” said Stewart Nyaruwata of Granite Carpentry. “A door looks like a simple job, but the details decide whether it works for years or becomes a daily annoyance. Our target is to install every door properly, whether it’s a standard size or a custom build.”

Tips from the Granite Carpentry team on hanging a door

Granite Carpentry shares the following advice for anyone planning a door installation or checking one that has been done:

  1. Check the frame first. A door can only hang as well as its frame. Make sure the frame is plumb (vertical), square and level before anything else. A frame that is out of line causes most sticking and swinging problems.
  2. Measure the opening in more than one place. Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom, and the height on both sides. Walls and frames are rarely perfectly even, so the door should be fitted to the smallest measurement.
  3. Leave the right gaps. A well-hung door has an even gap of roughly 2 to 3 mm along the sides and top. Leave more space at the bottom for flooring, carpets and rugs, and for airflow.
  4. Fit enough hinges. Heavier doors, such as solid wood and security doors, need three hinges, not two, to stop them sagging over time.
  5. Cut the hinge recesses properly. Hinges should sit flush with the door edge. If they sit too deep or too proud, the door will bind or leave an uneven gap.
  6. Drill pilot holes and use long screws. Pilot holes stop timber from splitting. Long screws in the top hinge, driven into the solid structure behind the frame, help hold the door’s weight.
  7. Test the swing. A correctly hung door should stay where you leave it. If it swings open or closed by itself, the frame or hinges are out of line.
  8. Seal timber doors on all edges. Any edges that are trimmed should be sealed or painted. Untreated timber absorbs moisture and swells, which causes sticking, especially in humid weather.
  9. Line up the lock and strike plate carefully. The latch should engage smoothly without force. A door that has to be pushed or lifted to lock is not aligned.
  10. Don’t cut more than necessary. Trimming a door too aggressively weakens it and leaves visible gaps that cannot be undone. Get the frame right first so only minimal trimming is needed.
