Pensioners are Uncovering the Health and Social Benefits of Golf on the KZN South Coast
Written by: Olivia Jones Communications Save to Instapaper
Golf is increasingly being recognised as one of the best sports for retirees. It provides a unique combination of physical exercise (golf carts optional!), mental stimulation, and (possibly most important) social interaction.
On the KZN Mid-South Coast, retirees are embracing the sport across the region’s many golf courses – with a comprehensive Renishaw Hills Golfing eBook available with tips and insights from locals!
“We’re treated to a variety of excellent golf courses and fantastic weather year-round,” says Barto van der Merwe, Managing Director of Renishaw Property Developments, a subsidiary of Crookes Brothers Limited.
“At Renishaw Hills, we have a very active golfing group called the Renishaw Ramblers who head out onto the course around three times a week at different clubs along the KZN South Coast. It’s just one great example of how residents stay active and connected in the beautiful outdoors.”
The Benefits Of Golf For Retirees
The advantages of golf are well-documented, but senior citizens benefit particularly from the low-impact nature of the sport.
Pensioners can keep fit while improving flexibility, coordination, and cardiovascular health.
Walking the course promotes endurance and mobility, while the swing motion strengthens muscles and improves balance, which is an important factor in preventing falls later in life.
Beyond the physical advantages, the sport also supports mental well-being.
The strategic nature of golf keeps the mind sharp, while time spent outdoors in scenic surroundings helps reduce stress and improve mood.
Meet The Renishaw Ramblers
Leading the estate’s golfing enthusiasts is Arno de Wet, chairman of the Renishaw Ramblers and a resident of Renishaw Hills.
“We normally have between 16 and 24 players joining us for our weekly games,” he explains.
“We play three times a month at Scottburgh Golf Club and once a month at another course such as Umdoni, Umkomaas, or Selborne. Any homeowner can join and we already have several ladies playing as well. For us, golf is a very social game where fellowship and camaraderie prevail – and of course it’s great exercise.”
De Wet says the welcoming community atmosphere at Renishaw Hills extends beyond the estate to the wider KZN South Coast golfing community, with special rates offered to them as a group.
“The courses here are fantastic, but what really makes it special is the people you meet and the friendships that develop on the fairways.”
Experiencing The Golf Coast
Residents of Renishaw Hills are ideally located to enjoy some of the country’s most scenic courses along the region known as the Golf Coast.
Among the favourites regularly visited by the Renishaw Ramblers are:
Scottburgh Golf Club
Celebrating more than a century of golfing heritage, this coastal course is known for its undulating terrain, ocean views, and thriving birdlife.
The course’s natural layout and sea breezes make every round both challenging and memorable.
Umdoni Park Golf Club
Ranked among South Africa’s top courses, this historic club winds through coastal forest and open grassland with spectacular ocean views.
Its varied terrain and scenic setting make it a favourite among visiting and local golfers.
Selborne Golf Club
Often referred to as the ‘Gem of the South Coast’, this parkland course meanders through lush forest and rolling hills.
It was also the site of South Africa’s first residential golf estate.
Umkomaas Golf Club
Founded in 1913, this historic course offers dramatic elevation changes and sweeping sea views, making it both visually striking and rewarding to play.
Beyond these four courses, golfers exploring the region’s famed Golf Coast can also enjoy seven additional courses:
San Lameer Country Club, Southbroom Golf Club, Port Shepstone Country Club, Margate Country Club, Wild Coast Sun Country Club, Amanzimtoti Country Club, and Harding Country Club.
Regular golfing events are hosted annually, such as the upcoming Scottburgh Sardine Run Golf Tournament taking place from 13 to 15 June 2026.
An Active Lifestyle At Renishaw Hills
Van der Merwe says golf is just one of the many ways residents maintain an active lifestyle.
“Renishaw Hills was designed around the idea of active ageing, and golf fits perfectly with that philosophy,” he says.
“Residents also enjoy walking groups, cycling, birdwatching, social clubs, and a variety of community events throughout the year. We’re also excited about the upcoming bowls green, which will add another fantastic sporting and social activity for residents to enjoy.”
