Ticra Urica Readies Men’s Washrooms for the Festive Rush

A three-in-one urinal screen that tackles splashback, uric scale and odour, fits in seconds and lasts up to 30 days, ahead of December’s busiest weeks

December is when a building’s washrooms take their hardest knocks. Shopping centres, fuel stops, stadiums, hotels and holiday destinations all see visitor numbers climb, and the men’s urinals are where the strain shows first: splashback on floors and walls, uric scale in the pipework, and odour that mopping between rounds cannot hide.

The jump is measurable. New Africa Developments, which manages a portfolio of township and secondary-city malls, reported a 20% increase in footfall from November to December 2025. More visitors means more flushes, more splashback and more pressure on cleaning teams working to the same schedule.

Nuwkem Hygiene’s Ticra™ Urica urinal screen, now available in a new Lemon fragrance, is built for exactly that pressure. One screen deals with three problems at once:

• Splashback. A dense matrix of extended, flexible bristles absorbs the force of the stream and guides liquid down into the drain, keeping surrounding floors and walls drier.

• Uric scale. An integrated block releases soil bacteria with every flush. These bacteria digest uric compounds in the bowl and U-trap, preventing scale and tackling odour at its biological source instead of covering it up.

• Odour. The recyclable, PDCB-free screen delivers continuous fragrancing for everyday scent control.

Moving away from masking chemicals

Many traditional urinal blocks rely on para-dichlorobenzene (PDCB) to mask smells. The European Union has restricted PDCB in toilet and indoor deodorisers at concentrations of 1% or more since June 2015, and operators are increasingly moving away from it.

Conventional blocks also do nothing about splashback or scale build-up in the pipework, which leaves facilities teams dealing with the same corrective cleaning, visit after visit.

In place before the peak

The Urica screen needs no tools or specialised fitting: staff place one screen in the urinal bowl. Each screen lasts up to 30 days or roughly 2 000 flushes, depending on traffic, so high-traffic sites may need to replace screens sooner over peak periods. Four fragrances (Lemon, Marine, Apple and Strawberry) let cleaning contractors standardise across multiple properties.

“Odour and splashback directly shape how people experience a building every day,” says Charl Broodryk of Nuwkem Hygiene. “We wanted a simple, reliable solution that tackles these problems at the root, cuts down on corrective cleaning, and steers clear of chemicals operators are actively moving away from. In busy environments, reliability and ease of maintenance really count.”

The Ticra™ Urica screen is part of Nuwkem’s Ticra™ range and is available through Nuwkem’s online shop and authorised distributors.
