A new 2km dual carriageway linking Atterbury Road and Garsfontein Road is now fully open to the public in eastern Tshwane, marking a significant step in easing congestion and improving connectivity in one of the city’s fastest-growing development corridors.
Developed by Balwin Properties at a cost of approximately R100 million, the K147 Zwavelpoort Road link provides a critical east-west connection across the Mooikloof node.
The road strengthens access between key routes, while supporting the long-term development of the broader area.
The new link is expected to benefit a wide range of communities and developments, including residents of Mooikloof estates such as The Hills, Mooikloof Equestrian Estate, Mooikloof Heights, Mooikloof Ridge, Mooikloof Glen, Mooikloof Eco Estate, Greenkloof, De Vallei, Woodlands Place and Heron Hills, among others.
In addition, the road will serve surrounding communities in Grootfontein and Zwavelpoort, as well as road users travelling from Moreleta Park and Olympus.
Importantly, the K147 forms a direct connection between Atterbury Road and Garsfontein Road, enhancing the effectiveness of public transport routes and contributing to improved mobility across eastern Tshwane.
Steve Brookes, founder and Chief Executive Officer of Balwin Properties, said the project represents a key infrastructure milestone in unlocking access and supporting urban growth in the area.
“This road introduces a vital new connection within the Tshwane road network and will play a meaningful role in reducing pressure on existing routes,” said Brookes.
“It will help relieve congestion currently experienced on Solomon Mahlangu Drive and De Villebois Mareuil Drive, which are key north-south routes used to access the N1 and R21 respectively.”
The road also forms part of a broader infrastructure framework supporting future development in the Mooikloof node, including the planned Mooikloof Smart City.
The precinct is envisioned to include schools, healthcare facilities, residential developments, retail centres, office parks and community amenities, all of which will rely on improved road access over time.
Planning for the K147 road began in 2019, with construction commencing on 6 May 2025 and reaching completion on 5 June 2026.
Approximately 400 direct and indirect jobs were created during the construction phase.
The development of the road formed part of approved planning and gazetted infrastructure requirements linked to the area’s ongoing urban expansion.
The road will be formally handed over to the City of Tshwane as public infrastructure.
Representatives from the City, including senior officials, are expected to attend the official opening.
Brookes noted that infrastructure investment of this nature plays an essential role in enabling coordinated urban growth.
“Projects like this are important in supporting the functionality of growing cities. By improving access and connectivity, they help create more efficient movement networks and support the continued development of integrated communities,” he said.
