Somerset West based engineering consultancy, Moroff & Kühne decided to establish its own Human Resources Development Program in 2006, as a result of being unable to find suitable technical staff for their structural and civil engineering practice.

“The education of our young people is very important to us and by offering this internship to deserving candidates we believe that we are investing in our own future and paying it forward,” explains Nik Moroff, MD of the company. Moroff & Kühne offers motivated Matric graduates with Pure Maths and Physical Science as subjects, a year’s internship in their Somerset West Office where they are exposed to basic engineering principles, business principles and practices, meetings and CAD drafting. “At the end of the year the student has a better understanding of business and engineering practices before embarking on their formal engineering studies,” says Suritha Venter, HR Manager at Moroff & Kühne.

“We have informed all the local high schools in the Helderberg Basin and handed out information brochures and have received positive responses from most of the Guidance Counselors we have met to date. We are looking forward to receiving applications from many interested students!” “The 2010 World Cup focus is not only inspiring youngsters to become famous soccer stars but it has also done a wonderful job of creating an awareness of construction and institutions are now starting to see an increase in the number of students applying for courses,” explains Nik. “We are however still short of engineers with experience and we now have to find ways of blending young skills with age and experience and overcome the challenges this way.” Nik believes that the internship helps provide the student with a general foundation in the engineering field.

“At the end of the year there is a possibility that we offer one student the opportunity to study further. By this stage we know one way or the other if a student has chosen the right profession.” The bursary pays the full tuition for a National Diploma at a University of Technology in South Africa. Tashlyn Walbrugh was a student at Moroff & Kühne in 2007 and received the company’s first bursary to study Civil Engineering at Tshwane University of Technology.

“It was an experience of a lifetime and I learnt some valuable lessons during my internship which have stayed with me during my first year of study at TUT!” says Tashlyn. ”I would advise every young person to take on something like this before studying. I will forever be indebted to M&K for opening my eyes to a world where there's always a solution for every problem and for teaching me that with hard work and determination comes great rewards,” comments Remell Oliphant, another of the interns in 2007. Lewis Maoneke, one of the 2008 students says, “I have had a good introduction into engineering and at first the detailing and drawing using Caddie looked very difficult but six months into the project I am getting the hang of it!” explains.

Further information on the program is available on the website or interested students may contact Suritha Venter on 021 851 1514. The closing date for applications is 31 August 2008.
