Acepak Unveils End-of-Line Machine Lineup for Q4 Planning

As South African producers in food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceuticals settle their fourth-quarter plans for 2026, Cape Town equipment builder Acepak has laid out the complete range of machines it makes and supplies for the tail end of a production line. September is when many local plants decide what will run through the festive build-up, and the company is treating that window as a chance to explain how its separate machine families work together, rather than leaving buyers to piece it together from individual product pages. Acepak operates as a packaging machine manufacturer that designs, engineers, assembles and tests its equipment on South African soil, a practice it has kept up for roughly four decades.

One line, several machine families

Very little at the end of a packaging line comes down to a single machine. Once a product has been filled and labelled, it still needs collating, wrapping or casing, banding or sealing, and finally stacking and securing for shipment. Acepak splits its offering into six areas that line up with those stages: case packing, shrink wrapping, banding, pouch filling, palletising, and the integration work that ties them together. Laying the range out this way is intended to ease the decision for a plant engineer who can tell the bottleneck sits somewhere past filling but is unsure which class of machine actually resolves it.

That layout mirrors the way the company sells, too. Whole lines are rarely swapped out at once by a producer. Far more common is a single stage choking throughput, where the answer is one machine that slots into the existing layout without demanding changes either side of it. Case packing and tray forming

Erectors, sealers and packers all fall under the case packing family. Among them are pneumatic and servo driven case and carton erectors and sealers, which erect and seal cases without loading product automatically, plus end loaded case packers that take products off infeed conveyors and push them into the case. For higher volumes there is the wrap around case packer, an inline system that draws pre-scored cards in and times them to the arriving product. Rounding out the group is a robotic case packer whose pneumatic or magnetic grippers lift product from the infeed and set it into preformed cartons.

Sitting next to these are tray formers and erectors. Using a die press, the automatic tray forming machine folds pre-scored cards around collated product, with hot glue securing the folds. Because trays are still widely used in South African retail, especially for canned goods, dairy multipacks and shelf-ready displays, a producer switching between case and tray formats has choices within a single range. As a packing machine manufacturer, Acepak tailors these units to the case sizes and pack patterns a customer is already running, which counts for a lot when the specification is dictated by a retailer instead of the plant.

Shrink wrapping across volume bands

Throughput is what separates the shrink wrapping options. At the entry level sit a sealer paired with a shrink tunnel for items that must be fully enclosed in film, and a semi automatic shrink wrapper for operations that cannot justify a fully automatic line. Moving up, the automatic tier brings an L-sealer, a cross infeed shrink wrapper fed from the side, a sleeve sealer and shrink tunnel, and an inline shrink wrapper fitted with a lifter for products that must be raised into place. A shrink wrapper with a flightbar deals with loose product in unsupported packs or on die-cut cardboard pads, grouping items through gated collation ahead of the seal. At the very top is a high speed system that uses gated control to release a set quantity of product and form packs from stored recipes.

What that breadth means in practice is that a beverage bottler running multipacks and a small food producer wrapping trays are not funnelled onto the same machine. Recipe driven changeover counts for most where one line juggles several pack formats within a shift, a pattern that is becoming routine as retailers request more pack variations from a single producer.

Banding, pouch filling and palletising

For banding, the Bandall stand-alone modular banding machine handles bundling jobs where a paper or film band suffices to hold a pack together without a full wrap. Thanks to its modular build, it can be configured in a wide range of ways to suit product size and where the band needs to sit.

Pouch filling has expanded as a format across food and household goods, and Acepak addresses three tiers of it. The automatic high volume pouch filler fills and seals blank stand-up pouches not yet closed at the top, spouts on the side included. The centre fitment pouch filler feeds pouches from a magazine rail into a rotary turret for accurate filling. And a manual spout pouch filling and sealing system works from centre-folded film off a roll, a good fit for shorter runs and trial products.

Palletising sits at the very end of the line, spanning robotic palletisers built as fully automated cells complete with pallet magazines, automatic feed conveyors, layer sheet inserters and product handling, alongside depalletisers whose magnetic or pneumatic robotic heads strip full pallets back onto an accumulation table. Stretch wrapping ranges from a semi automatic machine up to an automatic wrapper and a mobile robotic stretch wrapper that can shift between areas, handy in a warehouse where wrapping points move with the season.

Integration and the parts most people forget

Everything that links the line together falls into the integration category: conveyors designed and made in house, spanning gravity-driven roller conveyors and radius bends up to a range of belt types; a stand-alone sleeve shrink tunnel for shrinking pre-applied sleeves or film onto bundled or individual products; a mechanical label and barcode applicator made for cases, outers and collated packs; and a pneumatically actuated trolley packer for inline automation. It is these pieces that determine whether a new machine genuinely lifts line output or merely shifts the bottleneck a few metres down.

Because it works as a packaging machine supplier in addition to a builder, the company matches its own locally made units with equipment from established machine ranges wherever that suits a customer better, and it builds its robotic palletising cells around internationally recognised robotics suppliers.
