The delicate art of skincare in cancer treatment and recovery

Skincare is crucial for protecting the body against sun damage, bacteria, and even infections. But for patients undergoing cancer treatment, even the simplest moisturiser or cleanser can trigger painful reactions, making specialist care essential.
Dr Kobus Erasmus, Head of Aesthetics at the Longevity Centre by RXME, explains, “Cancer treatments often leave the skin feeling dry, itchy, and sensitive to most personal care products. Radiation, in particular, can cause peeling, blistering, or lasting changes in skin tone. As a result, even everyday things like scented creams, hot showers, or tight clothes may suddenly cause pain or irritation. That’s why oncology-aware care is so important.”
To highlight these needs and provide better care for cancer patients during National Cancer Awareness Month, the Longevity Centre is partnering with iS Clinical this October to host a dedicated cancer care drive. Qualified therapists will offer free oncology-safe treatments, including the Harmony Facial, ideally suited for skin affected by cancer therapies. Patients will also receive access to the Pure Wellness Collection – a carefully developed home-care kit that helps cleanse, hydrate, and protect skin between treatments.
This treatment and products prioritise comfort and safety, helping patients maintain healthier, calmer skin during and after treatment. Therapists will also provide helpful advice for practising proper skincare while healing from cancer.
Elle van Rensburg, Product Specialist at Stern Laser, distributors of iS Clinical in South Africa, says, “In a journey that already asks so much, this partnership is our way of showing up for patients and their families. The iS Cancer Care programme brings gentle, oncology-safe treatments into the healing space, helping patients through a difficult time, while giving them products they can use at home to feel more comfortable and supported.”
Seven critical skincare dos and don’ts during treatment
Dr Erasmus emphasises that informed choices and small changes can make a big difference to skin during cancer treatment and recovery:
- Choose fragrance-free products
Even mild scents can sting or cause rashes on skin made fragile by treatment. Stick to fragrance-free formulas for sensitive skin, and avoid scented lotions, body sprays, or fragranced soaps.
- Moisturise often
A rich, gentle moisturiser such as iS Clinical’s specially formulated Sheald Recovery Balm helps lock in hydration and soothe discomfort. Apply the moisturiser several times a day as needed – don’t wait until skin feels tight or sore.
- Use mineral sunscreens
Zinc oxide or titanium dioxide sunscreens protect sensitive skin without harsh chemicals. Apply daily, even on cloudy days, and skip chemical sunscreens that may burn or sting. iS Clinical’s Extreme Protect SPF 30, for instance, is ideal for providing multilevel protection to sensitive skin.
- Avoid strong actives
During treatment, skin cannot tolerate potent anti-ageing serums. Pause retinoids and high-strength vitamin C, and wait for medical clearance before trying new active ingredients. To make sure patients’ vitamin needs are still met, iS Clinical recommends its Poly-Vitamin Serum option.
- Skip exfoliation
Skin needs time to heal, so steer clear of scrubs, brushes, or acid peels. Use soft cloths instead, and let healing happen naturally.
- Cleanse gently
Choose cream or milk cleansers that clean without stripping natural oils, and avoid foaming gels, bar soaps, or harsh wipes that may irritate. For the best result, iS Clinical prescribes its soothing Cream Cleanser.
- Always follow medical advice
Finally, always follow the guidance of medical professionals such as the expert therapists at the Longevity Centre by RXME and iS Clinical with regard to creams, medications, or treatments.
“Before starting facials, peels, or laser treatments, consult a medical professional trained in oncology care to ensure your safety,” Dr Erasmus advises.
The Longevity Centre by RXME and iS Clinical will host the public and media at its Bloemfontein centre on 14 October 2025 to explore oncology-safe treatment options and the science behind supportive skincare for cancer patients.
