Hats On for Children’s Palliative Care Campaign 2024
Submitted by: Sue BoucherPress release date: Tuesday 09 October 2024
Every year, Palliative Care for Children South Africa (PatchSA) joins thousands of people worldwide to raise awareness of the need for enhanced palliative care for children with life-limiting and life-shortening illnesses, and their families. Initiated by the International Children’s Palliative Care Network (ICPCN) in 2014, the #HatsOn4CPC campaign is celebrated annually on the second Friday in October. This year, the day of action falls on 11 October 2024 and aims to show support for these children and their families while addressing the inequality in children’s palliative care provision in South Africa and globally.
Palliative care, identified as an essential component of Universal Health Care, receives minimal support from South Africa’s government health authorities. Children’s palliative care provides holistic care that includes expert pain and symptom management, along with emotional, social, and spiritual support for the child and family, ensuring an improved quality of life.
Sue Boucher, Programme Manager for PatchSA, explains, “The worst possible scenario in any parent’s life is to hear a diagnosis that could or will lead to a shortened life span for their child. In these situations, it is critical to offer multilayered and expert support that ensures not only the best possible care for the child but also compassionate preparation and support for the family.”
The Need for More Support
PatchSA estimates that over one million children in South Africa would benefit from palliative care, yet less than 5% can access these services due to limited resources. With only six dedicated children’s palliative care organisations in the country and just one part-time government-funded paediatric palliative care post, the #HatsOn4CPC campaign calls for greater awareness and funding for these essential services.
How to Get Involved
The Hats On for Children’s Palliative Care campaign has a simple 3-part request:
- Wear a hat on Friday 11 October to show support.
- Post a photo on social media using the hashtag #HatsOn4CPC.
- Donate to PatchSA or another children’s palliative care service.
Schools, businesses, and organisations are encouraged to participate by asking students or staff to wear hats and make a small donation. For more information or to donate, please visit the campaign page at https://patchsa.org/hats-on-4-childrens-palliative-care-day/.
