Firehorse keeps the flame alive at Vergelegen
Written by: Vergelegen Wine Estate Save to Instapaper
In the wake of the March fire that gutted the popular Stables restaurant, Vergelegen Wine Estate has responded with characteristic resilience. Temporary restaurant Firehorse opened on Friday 17 April to ensure that guests continue to enjoy the Somerset West estate’s signature hospitality while Stables restoration work is underway.
Seating 130 guests, the restaurant is located alongside the Stables site, next to the legacy vineyard block. Inspired by the much-loved original, the décor pays tribute to Stables’ equestrian heritage. The marquee sides open, allowing guests to dine al fresco while taking in sweeping mountain views.
A Menu Inspired by a Favourite
Many Stables classics are on the menu. Breakfast options include, but are not limited to, eggs Benedict, a hearty farm breakfast, French toast and smashed avocado on toast, plus freshly baked blueberry scones and croissants.
Lunch starters include salmon tartare, West Coast mussels and French onion soup, while mains range from bobotie and grilled kingklip to melanzane and grilled tiger prawns. There’s also a selection of signature salads and burgers, including a delicious vegan burger served with crispy French fries.
Desserts are citrus crème brûlée, chocolate mousse and berry Pavlova.
A Message of Resilience
“We’ve been overwhelmed by messages of support since the Stables fire,” says Vergelegen CEO Wayne Coetzer. “We’re incredibly grateful that the blaze was contained quickly and no-one was injured.
“Firehorse represents continuity and resilience while Stables undergoes restoration. We plan to start construction soon, which will take approximately seven months.
“Support for Firehorse ‒ both as a restaurant and as a private functions venue ‒ will enable us to retain our 73 dedicated Stables staff members, safeguarding jobs and providing stability for the team while we rebuild and move forward.“
Bookings
Firehorse is open from 08h30 to 17h00 (kitchen closes 15h30) until the end of October.
