Fresh Spring Breakfast and Lunch Boxes From Sandwich Baron

As spring settles in and the business year enters its final stretch, Sandwich Baron is putting the spotlight on the working day this October. South Africa's largest sandwich group is promoting its breakfast range, lunch boxes and training lunch bags next to the sandwiches and catering customers already know. Planning sessions, staff training and year-end reviews are keeping offices busy, and the group's seventeen stores are ready to cater for those days, from the first coffee of the morning through to the afternoon meeting.

No ready-made products are kept in stock at Sandwich Baron. Every item is prepared fresh once the order comes in, which keeps wastage down and means nothing sits waiting on a shelf. Customers can pick white, brown, wholewheat or health bread, plain or toasted. French bread (22cm) and Footlongs (35cm) come in white or brown.

Early morning orders

Teams that start early have a light breakfast and a meat-free one to choose from. The Light Breakfast serves scrambled eggs and toast with back bacon, cocktail pork sausages and grilled tomato. The Vegetarian Breakfast mixes sautéed mushrooms and fresh tomato through scrambled eggs, adds mozzarella on top and comes with low GI toast. For people eating on the go, there is a Bacon and Scrambled Egg Pita.

Breakfast meetings for bigger groups can be covered by the Breakfast platter, which serves eight to ten people with toasted sandwiches, spring rolls, ham and cheese muffins, chipolatas and fruit kebabs. The Early Morning platter, sold in half and full sizes, is a spread of toasted sandwiches: cheese and tomato, bacon and cheese, bacon, cheese and egg, and ham and cheese.

Individual meals for training days

Workshops, onboarding and on-site training tend to cluster in October, and on those days every attendee needs a meal of their own. That is the gap the Sandwich Baron lunch box range was designed to fill. In the Healthy Lunch Bag you get a wholewheat chicken salad sandwich, an apple or banana, and water. There are two Training Lunch Bags. The first holds a sandwich, fruit and a Liquifruit. The second holds French bread, fruit, a packet of crisps and a Liquifruit. The Breakfast Bag packs a bacon and cheese sandwich with fruit salad, crisps, a Liquifruit and a mini yoghurt.

Bigger appetites are catered for too. The lunch box menu lists crumbed spicy chicken livers with a ranch salad, a chicken strip boat, a chicken wing lunch box, a spicy snack box with crumbed mushrooms and onion rings, and mixed lunch and snack boxes filled with samoosas, nuggets, meatballs and viennas. Biltong and fresh fruit can be added to an order.

Each bag and box is packed on its own, so nobody has to plate, serve or clear up afterwards. That works well in boardrooms and venues with short breaks between sessions.

Catering for meetings of any size

The group's platters handle larger gatherings and suit many tastes and budgets. The Businessman's sandwich platter, in half and full sizes, combines brown and white sandwiches with assorted fillings. The Health platter is made on low GI bread with lighter fillings. The range also includes an all cheese platter, a cheese and biscuit platter, cold meat, chicken and cocktail options, and the Go Bokke platter loaded with ribs, sausage rolls, chicken strips, nuggets and meatballs. Most platters feed eight to ten people, and some feed ten to twelve.

Corporate lunchtime catering has been a focus for Sandwich Baron for many years. Its franchise overview calls the business a food producing and delivery company committed to better sandwiches, snacks and services, particularly for customers that mainstream fast food outlets don't serve well. The first store, in Alberton, opened in May 1996. It made its name on fresh food and free deliveries and went on to become the group's training division.

Smaller meetings get the same treatment. If a full platter is more than a team needs, the half-size Businessman's sandwich and Early Morning platters offer a lighter spread for eight to ten people. Pairing a platter with a few individual lunch bags also lets organisers look after guests who would rather have their own portion. Food is made once the order is placed, not pulled from a display fridge, so customers can arrange a set delivery time and count on it arriving freshly made. That helps most when a meeting starts straight after lunch.

Options for every eating preference

People in the same office seldom eat the same way, and the menu is set up so one order can cover everyone. Sandwich Baron added Banting options in 2016 and says demand for them is strong. Next to the classic sandwich menu are salads, wraps, baked potatoes, tramezzini and tacos, and customers can either build their own sandwich or order from the set menu. Avocado and spinach depend on availability.

How to order, and the rewards for regulars

Sandwich Baron's online ordering system connects to every store. Starting an online order comes with free delivery, and regular customers earn loyalty points each time they order. For offices that order breakfast or lunch every week, those points build up quickly.

Among the seventeen stores are branches in Alberton, Boksburg, Bedfordview, Bryanston, Centurion, Edenvale, Linbro Park, Lynnwood, Midrand, Klerksdorp and Middelburg. Most trade Monday to Friday and on Saturday mornings. The store locator shows each branch's phone numbers and email address, so customers can contact their closest store directly about large catering orders.

The workday theme carries through to the group's blog, where recent posts cover corporate food delivery for lunchtime meetings, how to present meat platters at gatherings, and how to put together appealing vegan platters for plant-based guests.

Local roots, local tastes

Sandwich Baron calls itself 100% South African, with a menu South African customers have shaped over the years. You can see it in the Go Bokke platter, samoosa boats and biltong add-ons, and in practical takeaways that make the trip from store to office in good shape.
