7 reasons you should visit Fish Eagle Café at Crocworld this winter

There’s no better place to be in winter than on the sunny KZN South Coast where the slight drop in temperatures makes spending time outdoors that much more enjoyable. For those looking to grab a delicious meal or refreshing beverage, the Fish Eagle Café based in the stunning Crocworld Conservation Centre in Scottburgh is well worth a visit!

“We’re excited to welcome new and returning visitors to the Fish Eagle Café this holiday, with this winter season already proving to be a popular one for the beautiful KZN South Coast,” said Fish Eagle Café Executive Chef and Manager, Morné van Zyl. “Crocworld Conservation Centre is the ultimate family outing, and the Fish Eagle Café is the perfect spot to relax, replenish, and take it all in.”

1. Culinary skills

Morné is a renowned chef with more than three decades of experience in the food industry. He puts together exquisite meals and great specials as he draws on the latest foodie trends. His culinary skills have seen him cater for various luminaries, including former presidents Thabo Mbeki, and Nelson Mandela, as well as taking on the food responsibilities for the 2003 enthronement of Kgosi (king) Leruo Molotlegi of the Royal Bafokeng Nation – attended by some 11 000 delegates and dignitaries. He was also tasked with catering a royal wedding in Matatiele where King Letsie the Third, King of Lesotho, and Queen Masenate Mohato Seeiso, were guests of honour.

2. Catch the Sardine Run

The Fish Eagle Café has an expansive wraparound deck with its elevation giving patrons incredible views of the Indian Ocean. Throughout the year, there’s a good chance of viewing dolphins that often frolic in the waves, but winter is an even more spectacular time. From June, as the cooler weather arrives, the world-renowned migration, the Sardine Run, takes place close to the shoreline, bringing with it a frenzy of marine life looking to feast. The Fish Eagle Café is the perfect spot to watch this spectacular phenomenon, with this season being a particularly active Sardine Run on the KZN South Coast.

3. Great views of Crocworld’s creatures

This popular conservation centre is home to a variety of exotic and Indigenous animal species including snakes, alligators, and crocodiles. From the deck of the Fish Eagle Café, patrons can enjoy views of the prehistoric crocodiles, including two of the most popular residents, Henry and Colgate. These two Nile crocodiles are not only massive – weighing well over 650kgs – but they’re also two of the oldest known Nile crocodiles in captivity, with Colgate around 92 years and Henry approaching his 124th birthday.

4. Special spot for birders

Crocworld Conservation Centre is home to more than 200 bird species, many of which live freely in the surrounding coastal forest. Keen birdwatchers can enjoy eating a meal or sipping a cold draft while enjoying some of the region’s best birding, all from the comfort of the Fish Eagle Café. From seabirds to birds of prey, this is the place to bring the binoculars and look out for the KZN South Coast’s impressive birdlife.

5. Affordable specials throughout the year

The customer-first approach at Fish Eagle Café means Morné and his team are constantly looking for ways to give hungry customers more value for money. Every Monday is the Pensioner’s Breakfast Special which is served throughout the day at just R48 a meal. It’s also worth following the Fish Eagle Café Facebook page for the monthly specials, seasonal specials, Curry Night, Valentine’s Day, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, Easter Scavenger Hunt, and more specials.

*Don’t miss the next Curry Buffet special at Fish Eagle Café on Friday, 26 July from 5pm to 9pm. For R185 per person, patrons will enjoy a delicious array of curry flavours, including oxtail, mutton, or butter chicken curries with basmati rice, popadums, naan and sweet fennel breads. Finish this off with a home-made condensed milk-kulfi ice cream and Bar One sauce.

6. The perfect special event venue

The Fish Eagle Café also caters to various lifetime celebrations including weddings, birthdays, year-end functions, and other special events. The skilled team, under the guidance of Morné, is ready to make this a memorable event for every guest. The Fish Eagle Café’s Kiddie’s Birthday deal includes a crumbed chicken burger and chips, fresh fruit, a Slush Puppy, and an ice cream cone all for R100 per child. There are also various wine-tasting events and themed evenings to enjoy throughout the year.

7. Beer and burgers

Patrons looking for a hearty meal and a cold brew are in for a treat at the Fish Eagle Café. Morné has put together a legendary burger meal that will satiate in hearty appetite. There is also ice-cold beer on tap to quench those big thirsts, as well as delicious cocktail combinations to enjoy while taking in the sea view.
