MK Kosher South Africa Honours Its Certified Local Brands
SOUTH AFRICA, October 2026. Longer, warmer days have arrived, and South African households are stocking up for picnics, weekend markets and padkos for the open road. MK Kosher South Africa is marking the season by highlighting the local farms and food brands that now display its symbol. It is also showing shoppers how simple it is to check whether a product on the shelf is genuinely certified.
Label-reading is a routine part of the weekly shop for many families. For local producers, making it onto those shopping lists can create opportunities both locally and overseas. MK Kosher South Africa connects these two groups, offering Kosher certification that consumers can trust and that producers can carry into export markets.
Local Brands Carrying the MK Symbol
A string of local certifications announced by MK Kosher South Africa over the last twelve months shows just how diverse the country's Kosher offering has become.
In October 2025, Schoonbee Landgoed received MK Kosher certification for a range of its products. The family-owned farm in Limpopo's Loskop Valley dates back to 1971 and today spans more than 2,500 hectares, specialising in grapes, citrus and exotic game breeding. The certified line-up features cold-pressed Pure Juices from oranges, mandarins and lemons, Naartjie Chips made from dried citrus slices, oat, golden syrup and coconut Crunchies, and dehydrated fruit such as grapes. Juice and dried citrus suit a warm spring afternoon well, and Kosher shoppers can now spot a familiar symbol on the pack.
September 2025 saw Grumpy Snacks come on board. The Cape Town company is best known for dry-roasted chickpea snacks in sea salt, chocolate-coated and cinnamon and maple flavours. Shoppers can find the range at Takealot, Clicks, Wellness Warehouse, Dis-Chem and selected Checkers and Spar outlets. According to MK Kosher South Africa, the snacks are also served on LIFT airline flights, so Kosher travellers flying domestically have a certified choice.
Trigz, Ice Bombs, Tabu Foods and Chocolate Tree are among the other South African brands that have earned MK Kosher certification. The agency's reach also stretches further up the continent: in January 2026 it added SITC Cocoa, an Ivory Coast cocoa producer, to its network.
Three Ways to Verify a Product
The agency recommends a straightforward three-step approach. Start by checking the packaging for the MK Kosher symbol. Next, look the product up in the Companies and Products section of the MK Kosher website, which lets shoppers search certified companies and items. Finally, if a preferred product cannot be found, ask the retailer to stock MK Kosher certified lines.
A dedicated Kosher Alerts page is also maintained. If a labelling mistake comes to light, for example a product marked with the incorrect dairy or pareve designation, the agency publishes an alert setting out the correct status and confirming what has been done to fix it. Its Newly Certified listing shows which companies have joined most recently. Between them, these resources give families a current reference point instead of relying on memory or hearsay.
The Certification Process for Producers
Working as a Kosher certification agency, MK Kosher South Africa examines every stage, from where ingredients are sourced to how products are made, to ensure each one meets Kosher requirements. The team combines rabbis with food and ingredient experts. Rabbi Yossi Baumgarten, who has over 40 years of experience in Kosher certification, heads the South African operation.
According to the agency, every business receives an approach suited to its needs. The team says it takes time to understand each company's story, upholds strict standards without compromising the product, and keeps all information shared during certification fully confidential. The agency also positions itself as an affordable option: fees are based on the cost of inspector visits plus a nominal administrative charge, and there are no hidden costs.
Global recognition is a key reason producers come forward. MK Kosher South Africa says its certification is accepted worldwide, allowing South African food to be exported to Israel, the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom without further questions. For a farm or snack maker eyeing overseas customers, securing Kosher certification in South Africa under an internationally recognised symbol can clear another hurdle between production line and foreign buyer.
Over a Hundred Years of Kosher Heritage
Founded in Montreal, MK Kosher calls itself North America's first Kosher agency. Its history spans more than a century, and it reports having certified over 1,000 companies around the world. Its South African website notes that it certifies more than 75,000 products globally.
This heritage means local producers gain access to a well-established international brand while dealing with a South African team. The agency says its goal is to pair longstanding Kosher tradition with the tastes of today's South African consumers, and it also helps clients aiming to meet international food safety standards.
A Symbol With Broad Appeal
The demand for Kosher products reaches far beyond the Jewish community, MK Kosher South Africa notes. The agency cites 1.5 million Kosher customers alongside 3.5 million non-Jewish consumers who buy Kosher goods, and says the Kosher food sector has become a $15 billion market over the last thirty years. Many people treat a Kosher symbol as a marker of careful oversight and transparent ingredient information, including assurance that no hidden dairy or animal-derived ingredients are present.
For South African brands, this means the MK symbol can reach a far larger audience than many would assume.
How to Apply
Manufacturers, restaurants, caterers and takeaway businesses can submit an application online and request a free quote and consultation. Businesses already certified by another agency are welcome to apply too. The agency also invites applications from anyone interested in becoming a mashgiach.
