Transformative Works at Alchemy Exhibition in Cape Town Ahead of 1-54 London

South African talent often garners international recognition before being celebrated locally. However, with Alchemy, a collaborative exhibition curated by Spier Arts Trust (SAT), the focus is on showcasing this talent within South Africa before it moves to the global stage. The exhibition is currently on display at HUB Gallery in Cape Town until 25 October 2024 and acts as a precursor to SAT’s Nando’s-sponsored showcase at the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair in London from 10-13 October 2024.

The Spirit of Collaboration

Echoing the collaborative ethos of SAT’s upcoming 1-54 collection, Alchemy embraces a process where professional artists work hand-in-hand with skilled artisans to bring their creative visions to life. The exhibition features more than 20 professional artists who have collaborated with artisans from HUB Mosaic Studio, Qaqambile Bead Studio, and the Keiskamma Art Project.

HUB Mosaic Studio continues the mission of the Spier Arts Academy, offering opportunities for fine artists to work closely with mosaic artisans to create unique, collaborative pieces.

Qaqambile Bead Studio, renowned for its intricate beadwork, contributes to Nando’s global design aesthetic and works with artists to translate their brushstrokes into bead art, exemplifying a meticulous, collaborative process.

Keiskamma Art Project, based in the Eastern Cape, is known for its large-scale textile works that preserve the cultural and historical heritage of the region. Since 2023, SAT has worked with this studio to create exceptional tapestries, connecting artists from across the country with local embroiderers, demonstrating the power of community and collaboration.

Showcasing South African Talent

The pieces on display in Alchemy are made using materials such as hand-cut glass and stone, glass seed beads, and wool embroidery. These three-dimensional, tactile works showcase the artisanal finesse of the contributors and reflect rich socio-political and personal narratives.

Notable pieces include Ronald Muchatuta and HUB Mosaic Studio’s evocative monochrome work, ZviShiri (The Birds), and Hanneke Benadé’s striking pastel collaboration with Qaqambile Bead Studio. Additionally, the exhibition features seven works from the Spier Collection, including Tamlin Blake’s memorable floor mosaic The Threaded Floor, a piece symbolising new beginnings while honouring history and legacy.

A Celebration of Heritage and Craftsmanship

Many of the artworks in Alchemy are deeply rooted in South African heritage. Nkosinathi Quwe’s piece reflects his isiXhosa heritage, while Meshack Tembani honours the powerful female figures from his upbringing in Crossroads. These pieces, imbued with cultural significance, highlight the magic of co-creation and the evocative use of traditional materials.
