The 10 most important interior design principles
Submitted by: Niki SteenkampNew York School of Interior Design describes interior design as “a profession that combines creativity, technical knowledge, and business skills. Interior designers work with clients and other design professionals to develop design solutions that are safe, functional, attractive, and meet the needs of the people using the space.
”Interior design can also be divided into different sections, but the main two are Commercial and Residential.
The 10 most important interior design principles include:
Balance
A room needs to have an equal distribution of visual aspects. The human body is symmetrical and as a result we naturally feel more comfortable in balanced settings.
Focal Point
It is very effective to have a single item in a room which draws attention.Unity and HarmonyDesigners envision the space in totality in order to design different rooms in relation to each other.
Rhythm
It is important to keep track of the visual pattern repetition in a space, either to keep it consistent or to break the pattern, each space is unique.
Details
While these can often be overlooked because they are not obvious, it is these finishing touches that complete a space and make it right.FunctionalityIt is important to know and understand what the space will be used for (the function of the space), in order to design effectively and non-invasively.
Sustainability
Sustainability could refer to the capacity or ability of something to be maintained or sustain itself. In terms of design, spaces should not destroy the environment around them, should be timeless in terms of trends and remain intact for long periods before wear and tear.
Traffic Flow
The layout of a space needs to take movement into consideration. Furniture and decorations need to allow flow in the room.
Lighting
Spaces need to include and use as much natural light as possible. Designers need to consider the amount of light needed in different areas found within a space as some may have too little or too much exposure.
Ventilation
Similar to lighting, natural ventilation is always preferred. Designers will focus on maximising the amount of natural ventilation before considering artificial ones.
