Barbour builds its South African presence with a new retail chapter
The British heritage brand brings the Barbour Way of Life to Sandton City.
JOHANNESBURG, 15 October 2026 - Barbour is building its presence in South Africa through its standalone Sandton City store, offering local customers a dedicated space to discover the British heritage brand’s collections and the stories behind them.
With Adventure Brands managing Barbour’s importing and distribution locally, the store forms part of a developing South African retail footprint, with plans for further expansion within the country.
Founded in South Shields, England, in 1894, Barbour has evolved from a supplier of practical clothing for sailors, fishermen and coastal workers into a fifth-generation family-owned heritage and lifestyle brand. Its signature waxed jackets remain central to its identity, complemented by a wider collection of shirts, knitwear, dresses, footwear and accessories.
On 15 October, media and influencers gathered at Barbour Sandton City to experience the Barbour Way of Life and explore the brand’s heritage, craftsmanship and collections. South African musician Majozi performed an intimate acoustic set in store, while Byron Teo, Barbour’s GM IMEA & SEA, Global Distributors, attended the occasion.
Among the guests was Rikus “RadioRaps” de Beer, a longstanding Barbour enthusiast who has previously bought the brand abroad and can now explore its collections closer to home.
The Sandton City store introduces both established fans and new customers to the details that have made Barbour recognisable around the world. Iconic wax jacket styles such as the Bedale, Beaufort and Border reflect the brand’s practical origins through distinctive silhouettes, waxed cotton, corduroy collars and signature tartan linings.
Beyond its iconic outerwear, Barbour offers a wardrobe suited to everyday life. From relaxed city dressing to coastal breaks and countryside weekends, the collections give South African customers opportunities to make the Barbour Way of Life their own.
Care and longevity also form part of the brand’s story. Barbour’s global Wax for Life programme encourages customers to keep waxed garments in use through care and re-waxing. Customers can contact the South African team for guidance on the care services available locally.
As its local retail presence develops, Barbour Sandton City offers a place to discover a brand whose heritage continues to shape the way it designs clothing today.
