FASHION, SAFE MIGRATION AND THE FUTURE OF AFRICAN YOUTH

The Gambia Immigration Department and Gambia International Fashion Week Explore a Strategic Partnership to Advance Safe Migration, Youth Empowerment and Global Creative Opportunities

Banjul, The Gambia | 22 October 2026

Fashion, when supported by vision and institutional engagement, can become more than a cultural expression. It can serve as a catalyst for economic development, international cooperation and new opportunities for young people.

This vision underpins the discussions between the Gambia Immigration Department (GID) and Gambia International Fashion Week, which have explored the possibility of establishing a strategic partnership to promote safe and regular migration while expanding professional opportunities for young Gambians within the creative industries.

The initiative brings together public institutions, fashion, cultural diplomacy and youth empowerment around a shared ambition: to ensure that young people can pursue their aspirations through informed choices, legitimate pathways and sustainable professional opportunities.

ISMAILA JALLOW: TURNING EXPERIENCE INTO OPPORTUNITY

During the discussions, Ismaila Jallow, founder of Gambia International Fashion Week, shared reflections on his personal migration experience, including his time in Italy. His journey has informed a broader vision: creating a platform through which young Gambians can develop their talents, access international opportunities and build sustainable careers in fashion, entertainment and other creative sectors.

At the heart of this vision lies a clear message: young people must be given credible alternatives, practical support and access to the opportunities they need to shape their own futures.

Jallow highlighted the importance of institutional collaboration in transforming creative potential into professional achievement. He also underscored the capacity of Gambian fashion and culture to strengthen the country's international profile, attract foreign direct investment and encourage multinational companies to recognise The Gambia as a destination for business, creativity and innovation.

He further called for greater support to help young Gambians access international markets, understand the legal requirements for overseas employment and navigate the procedures necessary to pursue opportunities abroad through safe and regular channels.

INSTITUTIONAL DIALOGUE AND A SHARED COMMITMENT

The Director General of the Gambia Immigration Department, Ebrima Mboob, welcomed the initiative and reaffirmed the Department's commitment to engaging with relevant partners to promote safe and regular migration while supporting the empowerment, professional development and advancement of young people.

He emphasised that migration must be addressed through a comprehensive perspective that extends beyond the prevention of irregular migration. Such an approach should also recognise the challenges individuals may encounter in destination countries and the importance of ensuring that appropriate information and support are accessible when needed.

The Director General also highlighted the need to strengthen cooperation among relevant stakeholders and provide clear, reliable and accessible information on migration pathways, enabling individuals to make informed decisions about their personal and professional futures.

These priorities establish a foundation for further dialogue on how institutional cooperation and creative-sector engagement might contribute to a more informed, opportunity-driven approach to youth mobility.

FASHION AS A BRIDGE TO GLOBAL OPPORTUNITY

The proposed collaboration reflects a broader understanding of fashion as an instrument of visibility, enterprise and international engagement.

Through Gambia International Fashion Week, Gambian creativity has the potential to connect local talent with international audiences, encourage professional exchange and strengthen the relationship between cultural identity and economic opportunity.

When supported by effective partnerships, the creative industries can contribute to employment, entrepreneurship, investment and the international positioning of emerging talent.

The discussions between GID and Gambia International Fashion Week therefore open an important conversation about the relationship between migration awareness, professional development and access to global markets.

The objective is not simply to discourage unsafe migration, but to help young people understand their options, develop their capabilities and pursue their ambitions through informed, lawful and sustainable pathways.

A NEW PERSPECTIVE ON AFRICAN YOUTH

For The Gambia, the initiative represents an opportunity to connect creativity with institutional engagement and international opportunity.

It also reinforces a wider message for Africa's emerging generations: talent must be recognised, ambition must be supported, and access to opportunity must extend beyond geographical boundaries.

As discussions continue, the prospect of cooperation between the Gambia Immigration Department and Gambia International Fashion Week offers a framework for exploring how fashion, public engagement and safe migration initiatives can contribute to a more inclusive and forward-looking future for young Gambians.

The next step will be to translate this shared interest into practical areas of cooperation, with a focus on information, skills development, international exposure and access to legitimate professional opportunities.

For a generation looking beyond borders, the challenge is not only to dream of a global future, but to have the knowledge, resources and pathways to pursue it safely.

MOKILI MOBIMBA RUYA — EDITORIAL STATEMENT

Fashion is more than an expression of identity. It is a language of opportunity, a platform for dialogue and a bridge between cultures, markets and generations.

By bringing migration institutions into conversation with the creative industries, this initiative places young Gambians at the centre of a broader vision of mobility, talent development and international engagement.

It is a reminder that Africa's creative future will depend not only on the brilliance of its talent, but also on the strength of the institutions, partnerships and opportunities that allow that talent to flourish.
