Simplifying Worm, Tick and Flea Protection for Pets

Johannesburg, 13 January 2025 – South Africa's furry companions often face risks from ticks, fleas, roundworm, and hookworm, even in the great suburban outdoors. Dr Tarryn Dent, Business Unit Lead: Companion Animals at Zoetis South Africa, emphasises the importance of proactive prevention to safeguard pets and their families.
Combating Common Parasitic Infections
Parasitic infections in dogs can cause significant distress for both pets and their owners. Worm infestations like roundworm and hookworm lead to health issues such as weight loss, diarrhoea, vomiting, and lethargy. These parasites can also affect humans, especially children or individuals with weakened immune systems, by causing severe health issues.
Ticks, on the other hand, can transmit life-threatening diseases like biliary and tick bite fever. These conditions damage red blood cells and weaken the immune system, leading to severe anaemia, fever, and organ damage. Fleas and mites, though not life-threatening, cause allergies, skin irritation, and discomfort.
The Hidden Threat of Intestinal Worms
Roundworms: These are the most common intestinal parasites in dogs, particularly puppies, and can cause symptoms like vomiting, diarrhoea, and coughing. Severe infestations can lead to malnutrition and intestinal blockages.
Hookworms: These blood-feeding parasites cause gastrointestinal upset, weight loss, and anaemia. Severe infections in puppies can be fatal due to significant blood loss. Both roundworms and hookworms can infect humans through contaminated soil or direct contact.
A Practical Solution for Busy Pet Owners
Dr Dent highlights that regular deworming is crucial but often neglected due to the inconvenience of administering multiple treatments. Zoetis developed the Simparica Trio, an all-in-one monthly chewable tablet, to address this challenge. The tablet combats worms, ticks, fleas, and mites, making prevention convenient for busy lifestyles.
Proactive Measures to Protect Pets and Families
To prevent parasitic infestations, pet owners should:
- Maintain a clean environment by removing waste promptly.
- Treat homes for fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes.
- Groom pets regularly.
- Begin year-round parasite prevention for puppies from eight weeks of age.
