South African-established Marine Protected Areas (MPA) Day Gets United Nations Endorsement in 2026

Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), often referred to as the 'nature reserves of the sea', are ecologically significant areas that protect vulnerable marine ecosystems, habitats and species, while supporting the people who depend on them.

Launched in South Africa on 1 August 2021, MPA Day aims to drive awareness of these areas dedicated to ocean – and planetary health – with the 2026 edition garnering support from the United Nations.

MPA Day now forms part of the Ocean Decade as an Activity under the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030).

This propels the initiative onto an international platform, reinforcing its role in advancing global ocean conservation.

United Nations Recognition

"When we launched MPA Day six years ago, our goal was simply to help more people understand why Marine Protected Areas matter,” said Dr Judy Mann-Lang, Founder of MPA Day.

“We knew that if people could connect with the ocean and with each other, they would more fully appreciate the value of the ocean and how together we can actively care for it. To now have that vision recognised through a United Nations endorsement is an incredible honour. It validates the importance of the collective work being done to protect our ocean and highlights the critical role MPAs play in securing a healthy future for our planet.”

Mann-Lang says this also provides an opportunity to unite individuals, local communities, organisations, scientists, conservationists and policymakers around the common goal of protecting the ocean:

What Does The UN Ocean Decade Endorsement Mean?

The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development was established to support transformative action for a healthy and sustainable ocean.

MPA Day is recognised for its contribution to raising awareness about ocean conservation, promoting ocean literacy, encouraging public participation, and supporting international efforts to protect marine ecosystems.

The endorsement also enables greater global visibility through Ocean Decade communication platforms and aligns MPA Day with a worldwide network of initiatives working towards a more sustainable relationship with the ocean.

Why Marine Protected Areas Matter

MPAs are designated sections of the ocean where human activities are managed to protect marine biodiversity and ecosystem health, so that these benefits of the ocean can be shared equitably.

These protected areas deliver significant benefits, including:

Protecting breeding, nursery and feeding grounds for marine species.

Supporting sustainable fisheries and food security.

Increasing resilience to climate change and environmental pressures.

Safeguarding vulnerable and threatened marine species.

Supporting tourism, recreation and coastal livelihoods.

Providing opportunities for scientific research, education and citizen science.

Mainland South Africa currently has 41 Marine Protected Areas covering approximately 5.4% of the country's Exclusive Economic Zone.

Globally, more than 5 000 MPAs exist, yet only a small proportion of the ocean is fully protected.

As the world works towards the Global Goal of protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030, MPA Day serves as a reminder that meaningful conservation begins with awareness, understanding and connection.

This makes public awareness and support for ocean conservation more important than ever.

Looking Ahead To MPA Day 2026

Celebrated annually on 1 August, MPA Day encourages people to appreciate and advocate for MPAs through educational talks, beach clean-ups, guided walks, sporting events, citizen science activities, art projects, social media campaigns, school programmes and ocean experiences.

Following record participation in recent years, organisers expect MPA Day 2026 to attract even greater international involvement as the movement continues to grow.

“What began as a simple idea to raise awareness about MPAs has quickly evolved into a worldwide movement celebrated across continents,” says Mann-Lang.

“The United Nations endorsement marks a major milestone in this journey, recognising MPA Day's contribution to conservation awareness and community engagement.”
