From Walking To Winning - Why Biodx Is Backing Diego Bandu

Johannesburg, 28 August 2026: South African biotech company Biodx has announced its brand partnership with professional MMA fighter Diego Bandu, in a collaboration rooted in shared values rather than simple brand visibility.

At first glance, biotechnology and mixed martial arts may seem far apart. The connection becomes clear when looking at the journeys behind both.

Bandu has built his career through discipline, sacrifice and years of work that happened long before the public saw the result. Biodx has followed a similar path in science and business, challenging established thinking in sectors where familiar solutions are often trusted before new ones are given a chance.

Shared values behind the partnership

For Bandu, MMA was never only about stepping into the cage. It was about honesty.

“MMA attracted me because it demands complete honesty,” says Bandu. “Inside the cage, there are no excuses, no shortcuts and nowhere to hide. Your preparation, discipline and character are exposed for everyone to see.”

Like many young athletes, Bandu faced financial pressure, limited opportunity and moments where the dream felt almost impossible. He has spoken openly about walking to training when he could not afford transport, working as a bodyguard and finishing late at night before returning to training again.

“My journey started with a dream, but it certainly wasn’t a straight path,” he says. “There were moments when the practical realities of life made the dream seem impossible. What carried me through those moments was my faith. My relationship with God has always been the foundation of my life.”

It is this depth of character that Biodx identified in Bandu’s story.

Biodx is a South African industrial biotechnology company that has researched and developed biocidal active ingredients using a natural citrus extract, with applications including disinfectant formulations and water treatment. Its work is focused on developing safer-to-use, more sustainable alternatives to conventional chemical technologies.

The company has also had to earn its place. As a company focused on safer to use, more sustainable technologies, Biodx has spent years proving its science, meeting regulatory requirements and building trust in industries that can be slow to shift from familiar methods.

“We can relate to Bandu’s emphasis on strength of character and complete honesty, because those same qualities are essential in biotechnology research and development and entrepreneurship, especially when pursuing innovation. We are asking the world to replace conventional chemicals with a better alternative.

“This type of innovation is rooted squarely in honesty, because compromised scientific data will eventually be exposed. Character must be grounded in sound principles and values, giving us the strength to resist market pressure to revert to conventional chemicals and to keep offering an innovative alternative,” says Burt Rodrigues, CEO, Biodx.

Bandu sees the parallel clearly.

“When I look at Biodx’s story, I see similarities,” he says. “They didn’t become an innovative biotechnology leader overnight. They had to believe in their vision long before others fully understood it. That kind of perseverance resonates deeply with me because I’ve lived it myself.”

Collaboration, discipline and belief

The partnership also reflects Biodx’s view that progress is rarely achieved alone. In its own work, the company has consistently pointed to collaboration as the way difficult problems are solved. Science needs partners prepared to test, refine and adopt better ways of working. Fighters need coaches, training partners and backers willing to stand with them before the outcome is certain.

“MMA may look like one person stepping into the cage, but no one succeeds alone,” says Bandu. “My faith, family, coaches, teammates and mentors have all played a role in shaping who I am today. Success isn’t only built on talent. It’s built on belief. Sometimes all it takes is one person or one organisation to see potential in you before the rest of the world does.”

For Bandu, the Biodx partnership carries personal meaning.

“Financial support is important, but belief is priceless,” he says. “Biodx isn’t simply sponsoring an athlete. They’re investing in a journey. They’re backing years of sacrifice, hard work, discipline and ambition.”

That discipline is visible in the cage, but it is built away from the crowd.

“Discipline is keeping promises to yourself,” says Bandu. “It’s the early mornings, the extra rounds, the strict nutrition, the recovery sessions and the commitment to excellence even when nobody is watching.”

“In biotechnology, discipline is tested when a trial doesn’t deliver what you expected and you have to go back, question the protocol and do the work again. Bringing genuinely new technology to market can take years, and it requires investors, researchers, scientific institutions and clients prepared to stay the course,” says Rodrigues.

The partnership also carries a message for young Africans with talent, but not always access.

“I hope they see that faith, perseverance and character can take you further than circumstances ever could,” says Bandu. “Many young Africans are carrying dreams that seem impossible because they lack resources, access or support. My message is simple: don’t allow your current situation to define your future. Stay faithful. Stay disciplined. Keep learning. Keep growing. And when opportunities come, be ready for them.”
