H2O Guru Highlights Spring Irrigation Water Testing

September 2026 finds H2O Guru pushing its irrigation analysis to the top of its offering, timed to the spring planting season now underway across much of South Africa. The Pretoria based laboratory is encouraging farms, smallholdings, nurseries, estates and packhouses to test the water destined for summer irrigation up front, while it can still shape decisions, instead of waiting for trouble to surface among the crops.

Their case is a down to earth one. Water used for irrigation here comes from boreholes, dams, rivers, canals, holding tanks and recycled supplies, and what it contains seldom stays fixed. As H2O Guru explains on its site, the chemistry of water can differ markedly from one property to the next, even for neighbours, because groundwater is moulded by geology, how deep a borehole runs, recharge patterns, nearby farming and industry, sewerage, and the materials that make up the borehole and its plumbing. Municipal and stored supplies drift too, affected by pipework, tanks, corrosion and blending with other sources. That means a sample pulled last summer says little about what the pump is delivering this spring, and it is exactly why scheduled water testing beats the occasional check.

What the irrigation package measures

The Irrigation Water package is priced at R1 885 including VAT, and results with analysis are currently turned around in roughly five to seven working days. Testing runs to SANS241 in a SANAS accredited laboratory carrying facility number T0647.

Its parameter list reaches well past a basic drinkability check, on the understanding that safe to drink and safe to irrigate are separate questions. Included are EC, pH, COD, SAR, Langelier, Ryznar, TSS, fluoride, chloride, sulphate, ammonia nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen, alkalinity, carbonate, bicarbonate, calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, boron, manganese, iron, phosphorus, faecal coliforms and TDS.

A number of these readings bear directly on growing. Electrical conductivity and total dissolved solids indicate the salt burden the soil must handle through a season. The sodium adsorption ratio bears on soil structure. Langelier and Ryznar flag scaling and corrosion tendency, which concerns drip lines and pumps as much as agronomy. Boron, chloride and sodium warrant attention because crops tolerate them very differently. Nitrogen and phosphorus values reveal what nutrients the water supplies before any fertiliser goes in. Faecal coliforms feature because irrigation water so often contacts produce that ends up eaten.

Test first, then decide

H2O Guru frames its method as test first: pin down the real problem, then treat only what genuinely needs it. The same thinking guides its drinking water work, where it notes that an analysis exists not merely to generate lab numbers but to reveal what affects health, taste, appearance, plumbing, appliances and how any treatment system performs. For irrigation, that means picking filtration, conditioning or blending from measured evidence rather than guesswork, and skipping kit that was never called for.

This habit of measuring before spending helps explain the standing that accredited water laboratories hold within the agricultural supply chain. A laboratory report stands up to scrutiny. It can be passed to an agronomist, an irrigation designer, a packhouse auditor or a bank, and it owes nothing to anyone's read of how the water looks in a bucket.

Sampling, couriers and the 24 hour rule

A good sample is half the job, and H2O Guru sets out its sampling method in the open. It advises drawing from a clean tap wired straight to the borehole rather than a storage tank, unless the tank is what you mean to test. Let the tap run steadily for about five to ten minutes to flush stale water from the lines, then wipe it with an alcohol swab or bleach solution and rinse it with the source water.

Use clean plastic PET bottles, the sort mineral or still water comes in. Glass, beverage, milk and fruit juice bottles will not do, and five litre bottles carry an extra R100 handling fee. Each test needs two 750ml bottles or two 500ml bottles. Rinse the bottle and cap several times in the source water, fill to the brim leaving as little air as you can, keep them clear of the tap, then label them.

After that it comes down to temperature and speed. Put samples in a cooler box or fridge, keep them out of the sun, and ideally wrap them in a black plastic bag or set them in a small box. They need to reach the laboratory inside 24 hours. Clients who cannot manage this can arrange on site sampling by one of the company's representatives or courier collection, with H2O Guru using courier services throughout the country. Both carry a fee.

A full range of packages behind the irrigation service

Irrigation sits within a wider menu. The SANS241 drinking water options begin with Microbiology Only at R945 including VAT, covering heterotrophic plate count, total coliforms, faecal coliforms and E. coli, move through Chemistry Only at R1 750 including VAT, and reach the combined Chemistry and Microbiology package at R2 300 including VAT. The chemistry side reports EC, pH, SAR, Langelier, Ryznar, turbidity, colour, odour, TDS, TSS, free chlorine, fluoride, chloride, sulphate, ammonia nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen, acidity, alkalinity, calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, manganese, iron and aluminium. Expect around five to seven working days for the single discipline packages and seven to ten for the combined one.

Bottled and purified water follows its own route under SANS1657 at R3 150 including VAT, adding a broader metals and microbiology list that takes in barium, cadmium, chromium, lead, nickel, antimony, arsenic, selenium, mercury, molybdenum and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, over roughly ten to twelve working days. Waste and effluent water is priced on enquiry and tested for chemical and microbiological parameters used in process control, disposal and legal compliance, since effluent released to the environment ultimately finds its way into surface and ground water.

On top of the standard packages, extra organisms can be requested, including Legionella, Listeria, Pseudomonas species, Salmonella, Shigella, Staphylococcus aureus, Vibrio species, yeast, mould, cholera, Enterobacteriaceae, Escherichia coli, Campylobacter and Bacillus cereus. These are quoted case by case on terms and price, as is usual for how specialist water labs deal with non routine determinands.

Boreholes, banks and property transfers

Spring also brings a rush of property transfers, and H2O Guru issues borehole bank compliance certificates as part of what it does. A bank certificate is needed for any sale backed by bank finance, and each South African bank sets its own conditions for granting a borehole yield test certificate. A borehole falling short of those conditions can jeopardise the financing. The bank certificate service takes in borehole certification, borehole yield testing and borehole pumps and motors alongside a SANS241 and microbiology test, and H2O Guru belongs to the Borehole Water Association.
