Following on from the birth ofa healthy elephant calf on Mother’s Day, the sixth elephant calf born at Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, we are now proud to announce the birth of four cheetah cubs. The sex of each cub is at this stage unknown. The Sanbona Conservation Team and the guides have been closely monitoring one of the adult cheetahs, whilst keeping an eye on the progress of the new born elephant, and saw she was looking for an appropriate site to create a den.

States Paul Vorster, Wildlife Manager: “After pinpointing her location and confirming a visual on her, four cubs were discovered. Their genes and offspring are very important to the conservation of the wild and self sustaining population within Southern Africa. Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, part of Shamwari Group, and the Endangered Wildlife Trust’s Cheetah Metapopulation Programme have worked closely over the years to help protect these magnificent cats.”

Cheetahs have a 3 month gestation period and this particular female had been seen courting with the male coalition. Den sites in this vast Karoo landscape provide cover from the sun and are a safe haven from other sources of potential danger, such as lions or hyenas.
