Beat the Heat With H2O Guru SANS1657 Bottled Water Checks
As South Africa heads into its warmest months, SANAS-accredited water testing laboratory H2O Guru is calling on water bottlers, refill stations and other businesses selling purified water to schedule their SANS1657 bottled water analysis during October. Spring is already well advanced and summer is close, which usually brings higher demand for bottled and purified water. Producers who verify their water quality at this stage can go into the hotter season able to supply customers with confidence.
Bottled water has its own food product category in South Africa. The Department of Health regulates and monitors it and has set purity and safety standards for the water bottling industry. For anyone who bottles or sells drinking water, regular accredited testing is therefore a practical necessity rather than a nice-to-have.
Inside the SANS1657 test package
The Bottled Water (Purified Water) SANS1657 package from H2O Guru brings chemistry and microbiology together in one analysis, performed in the company's accredited laboratory under reference T0647. On the chemistry side, the panel measures EC, pH, SAR, the Langelier and Ryznar indices, turbidity, colour, TDS, fluoride, chloride, sulphate, nitrate, acidity, alkalinity and bicarbonate. Calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium and boron are also included, along with a broad set of metals and trace elements: manganese, iron, copper, zinc, barium, cadmium, chromium, lead, nickel, aluminium, antimony, arsenic, selenium, mercury and molybdenum.
For microbiology, the analysis checks for faecal coliforms, total coliforms, heterotrophic plate count (HPC) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Taken as a whole, the results show a bottler plainly whether their product falls within the parameters of the South African National Standard for bottled water.
The cost of the package is R3 150 including VAT, and payment is due before results are released. Turnaround for laboratory results and analysis is currently about ten to twelve working days.
Putting test results to work
Accredited testing also gives bottlers something useful to do with their findings. H2O Guru issues accredited certification that businesses can display, showing customers that the quality of the water they sell matters to them. In addition, the tested chemical composition of prepared water may be printed on bottle labels, giving buyers a transparent account of what is in the bottle.
According to the company, bottled water falls into three types: water bottled from natural sources such as springs, water defined by origin, and treated or prepared water. Every type must comply with hygiene standards, microbiological legislation, treatment labelling standards and chemical regulations. For more background on industry standards, H2O Guru's website also refers bottlers to the South African National Bottled Water Association (SANBWA).
Nationwide sampling and collection
Where a business is located does not stand in the way of accredited water testing. Clients can have a H2O Guru representative take samples at their premises, or arrange courier collection, with couriers operating nationwide. Sampling and collection carry a fee. As a result, a small bottler in a rural town and a large plant in a metro area can rely on the same accredited laboratory without having to deliver samples themselves.
The laboratory was purpose-built for drinking water chemistry and microbiological analysis and makes use of automation, sample tracking and up-to-date analytical methods and techniques. Its instruments are dedicated to drinking water testing and cover regulated as well as non-regulated compounds of concern.
A first test also gives new bottling businesses a baseline to work from. By measuring later reports against that original one, it becomes simpler to spot changes in source water, treatment equipment or handling practices over time. Established bottlers can follow the same method to confirm that filtration, disinfection and storage are still working as they should after a busy season, while building a documented history of quality checks to present to retail customers or inspectors on request.
Testing beyond the bottle
Bottlers may be this month's focus, but H2O Guru tests many other water sources too. Its SANS241 packages, measured against the South African National Drinking Water Standard, are available as drinking water chemistry only, microbiology only, or a combined chemistry and microbiology option. Additional packages are offered for borehole water, irrigation water, and waste and effluent water. The company advises testing borehole water and any other source used for human consumption at least once a year.
Its client base spans households and a wide mix of industries, among them industrial and manufacturing operations, food and beverage producers, irrigation and agriculture, hospitality, construction and mining. H2O Guru's services are accredited under various national and local standards, and its SANAS certification, together with a complete list of tests and standards, can be downloaded from its website.
Within the field of South African water laboratories, H2O Guru treats accredited SANS241 testing as its first line of operation, backed by turnkey solutions that help clients treat water into safe drinking water when results reveal a problem. ScaleStop water conditioners form part of its product range.
H2O Guru places its work against the backdrop of South Africa's broader water challenges, citing shrinking supplies and doubtful quality in many areas. The company says its goal is to offer services and products that help people gain and keep access to safe drinking water, a focus captured in its slogan, drink pure, live more.
The case for testing ahead of summer
Good-looking, good-tasting water is not necessarily safe to drink. Harmful bacteria, parasites and viruses are invisible to the naked eye, and certain chemical contaminants can lead to long-term health problems that only develop over years. For a bottling business, finding a quality problem after product is already with customers costs far more than catching it through routine testing.
A test booked in October delivers results comfortably before December, giving producers time to adjust treatment, revise labels or resolve any issue ahead of the peak season. Bottlers weighing up accredited water labs can request a test straight from H2O Guru's online form, which records the province and city so that sampling or courier collection can be organised.
