Just right after celebrating youth month, Ithala SOC Limited is dedicated to maintaining its programmes to unlock the potential and development of future leaders.
In addition to promoting financial inclusion for previously disadvantaged groups, particularly in rural areas of KwaZulu-Natal, Ithala has contributed to developing and nurturing youth through education over the past 23 years, in order to prepare them to compete in the global job market.
"Ithala recognizes the need to bridge economic gaps through education. During Youth Month, we aim to elevate our dedication and commitment to improving the plight of the youth in our country," said Dr. Thulani Vilakazi, CEO of Ithala.
Under the Ithala Education Trust, a non-profit organization, a range of educational programmes have been established to make education accessible and impactful for all. This includes leadership programmes, skills development initiatives, and community outreach efforts, all aimed at creating opportunities for growth and success.
Ithala Education Platform was introduced in response to the significant lack of tutoring for grade 12 caused by the Covid lockdown. In partnership with the GoDigitalSA Foundation, the online Ithala Education Platform offered free tutoring for subjects such as Accounting, Computer Applications Technology, English, Geography, isiZulu, Mathematics, and Physical Science.
The Ithala Education Platform is available online, accessible anytime, anywhere, from any device with an internet connection: https://myithala.education/
Uphile Shange, a former student of Sidelile Secondary School in Umkomaas, achieved seven distinctions in the matric 2023 exams and commends the Ithala Education Platform for helping him excel academically
Recognizing the financial barriers hindering many aspiring learners, Ithala joined the #FeesMustFall Campaign in 2018, providing crucial support to 13 deserving learners by covering their registration fees for tertiary education. This financial assistance not only relieved the burden but also empowered these learners to pursue their educational aspirations.
Simphiwe Mhlongo, one of the beneficiaries, was accepted into Wits University to study for a Bachelor of Science in Construction degree, graduating in 2020 and receiving his Honors in Quantity Surveying in 2022.
Ithala also provides opportunities for experiential learning for graduates through a leadership program funded by BANKSETA, preparing students for careers in banking and ICT skills.
"Our ongoing efforts to assist in the education for the development of our future leaders gives an incredible opportunity to assist unemployed youth to acquire knowledge, get qualifications, and help shape their careers and empower their futures," said Dr. Vilakazi.
