Answered! The 6 Insurance Questions Consumers Ask the Most
Submitted by: Nhlalenhle DlangalalaMany consumers find insurance terms, conditions, and processes tricky—but they don’t have to be! King Price Insurance’s client experience partner, Wynand van Vuuren, answers some of the most commonly asked questions from their customers:
1. What Is Under-Insurance?
You need to insure your buildings, home contents, and portable possessions for the value of like-for-like replacements at today’s prices. The insured value for your buildings should cover the full cost of repairing or rebuilding your property, including outbuildings, perimeter walls, and swimming pools, as well as professional and municipal fees, demolition costs, and waste removal. If not, you’re under-insured, and valid claims will be paid out proportionately.
2. Why Must I Have My Car Inspected?
Unless your car is brand-new, most insurers require an inspection as a condition of cover. This proves the car exists, as there have been instances where people try to insure fictional cars to claim later. An inspection also records any existing damage, which won’t be covered. Fraud prevention measures like these help to keep premiums low for everyone.
3. Who’s the Regular Driver?
The regular driver is the person who drives the insured car most frequently each month and is noted as such on your policy. If the regular driver changes, inform your insurer immediately, as it may affect the risk profile and, consequently, your monthly premium.
4. Will My Insurer Cover a Rental Car?
You can choose to add car hire cover to your car insurance, ensuring you have a rental car if your insured vehicle is damaged, being repaired, or is not driveable. The rental car is available if there’s a valid claim, or if your car is stolen or hijacked and not recovered. Car hire is linked to your car cover, so it won't apply if your vehicle is repaired under a different policy. Generally, a rental car will be provided for up to 30 days while your claim is finalised.
5. Can I Choose My Own Provider to Fix Damage?
Insurers work with approved service providers to manage costs, ensure quality, and stick to agreed timeframes. As a result, your car will likely be sent to one of these providers. Exceptions may be made for rare, vintage, or collectable cars.
6. How Can I Help Speed Up a Claim?
If you’ve had a car accident, use your insurer’s approved towing service. Failing to do so could add time and costs. Save the towing number on your phone now and check your policy for any specific timeframes or requirements. Contact your insurer immediately—within 30 days of the incident—and follow all instructions promptly.
Understanding Insurance Terms
Van Vuuren notes that King Price Insurance strives to write its policies in clear, everyday English. However, if you don’t understand something, just ask. “Providing incorrect information can lead to incorrect cover, causing issues when you claim. It’s crucial to understand all the terminology when getting a quote and afterwards.”
