In Memory of Sky - A Call for Compassion and Accountability in Animal Welfare

The recent death of Sky, a Belgian Shepherd and former South African Police Service K9, has deeply saddened animal lovers and veterinary professionals across South Africa and beyond.

Sky was found seriously injured while being housed at the SAPS Veterinary Hospital in Roodeplaat. Despite emergency veterinary treatment, the severity of her injuries led to the decision to euthanise her on 9 September 2026 in order to end her suffering.

According to information made public by the South African Parliament, Sky had previously experienced severe anxiety, kennel stress and repeated attempts to escape. Veterinary records reportedly documented concerns about her welfare and the risks associated with continued confinement before the incident that ultimately led to her death. These circumstances are now subject to investigation.

As a platform dedicated to connecting people with veterinary services and information about animal care in South Africa, we believe that every animal entrusted to human care deserves compassion, dignity and appropriate protection.

Sky was a working dog who had served the South African Police Service. Like all animals, she depended entirely on the people responsible for her welfare.

Whatever the outcome of the ongoing investigations, her death should remind all organisations responsible for animals that their physical and psychological wellbeing must remain a fundamental priority.

We support a transparent investigation

We welcome the investigations into the circumstances surrounding Sky's injuries and death.

The South African Parliament has reported that the matter has been referred beyond the SAPS internal process, including to the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) and the South African Veterinary Council. A post-mortem examination was also expected to form part of the investigation.

We believe that the facts should be established transparently and independently, and that all relevant evidence should be carefully examined.

This includes veterinary records, kennel and inspection records, CCTV footage, duty records and any other information necessary to understand exactly what happened.

Animal welfare must come first

The circumstances surrounding Sky's death have understandably generated strong emotions among members of the public.

However, beyond the anger and sadness, there is an important principle that should unite everyone involved in animal care:

Animals cannot speak for themselves. Those responsible for their care must speak and act for them.

Veterinary facilities, shelters, police K9 units, breeders, boarding facilities and all other organisations entrusted with animals have a responsibility to provide appropriate care, supervision and protection.

The welfare of an animal should never become secondary to administrative procedures, organisational difficulties or institutional responsibilities.

Remembering Sky

Sky's life had value.

Her service, her suffering and her death should not be forgotten.

We hope that the investigations will establish the full circumstances of what happened and that the lessons arising from this tragedy will contribute to stronger animal welfare practices and greater protection for working animals throughout South Africa.
