NSPCA Launches "Adoptim" – A Lifelong Bond That Benefits All
Written by: Thato Moloi Save to Instapaper
The NSPCA is encouraging the public to adopt rather than shop for pets, highlighting the significant impact this decision can have on both the animals and their new families. Thousands of animals in South Africa await a second chance at a loving home, and by choosing adoption, you not only give them that opportunity but also contribute to solving the issue of homeless pets.
Why Adoption Matters
Jacques Peacock, Communications Manager at the NSPCA, emphasises the importance of this choice:"By adopting rather than shopping, you're not only giving an animal a forever home but also helping to reduce the number of homeless pets in South Africa."
To raise awareness about the emotional benefits of having a pet, the NSPCA has launched the Adoptim: A Furry Prescription campaign, reminding potential adopters that pets can offer comfort and companionship while also requiring long-term commitment.
Clinical psychologist Tracy Eliott explains that scientific research shows pet ownership can enhance mental health by reducing stress and promoting feelings of calm and connection. Pets can serve as a valuable complement to well-being, providing moments of joy and purpose for their owners.
Building a Lifelong Bond
While pets can certainly enhance our lives, it’s essential to remember that adopting a pet is a long-term responsibility built on care, trust, and love. The NSPCA offers support to individuals ready to take this step, guiding them through the adoption process and ensuring a positive bond with their new companion.
