Nyeleti celebrates 20 years built on firm and sterner foundation of education and mentoring
Submitted by: Kgomotso Molefe29 April 2019- One of South Africa’s leading black owned consulting engineering companies celebrates 20 years in business this year, largely thanks to its early adoption of transformation, women empowerment and achievement of excellence, through mentoring and continuous staff training and development. Nyeleti Consulting Engineers has grown from a four-man firm in 1999 to more than 120 staff members today, with limited staff turnover over the years, because of its belief in professional development and support for its engineers and technicians. “Investing in the formal training of staff members, for example through the granting of study bursaries and study leave to staff members following post-graduate courses has benefitted us greatly over the years.
Our formal training also includes bursaries for pre-graduate students, and attendance of seminars, workshops and conferences,” said Pine Pienaar, CEO of Nyeleti Consulting Engineers. The company also developed and implemented an active mentorship program. “Mentorship is not only being provided through practical training and guidance at the project execution level, but also by presenting formal lectures and discussion sessions on a regular basis,” said Pienaar. Another intervention which has proven to be a huge success for Nyeleti has been the employment of experienced senior engineers who have a high industry profile and many decades of experience in the industry. Nyeleti Consulting Engineers was formed early in the democratic South Africa by Pienaar and Stanford Mkhacane, another professional engineer, after spending some time working for multinationals in some infrastructure projects both in and out of the country. The company’s birth was also in response to the changing business landscape within the infrastructure development space, and professional engineering industry.
“The company has enjoyed natural growth over the past twenty years from four to almost 120 personnel. We have been able to attract key expertise which enabled us to diversify within the civil engineering industry and we are now offering a wide range of consulting services to a spectrum of clients in both the public and private sector,” says Mkhacane, who is the company’s Chairperson. The results of the company’s investment in its staff is also evidenced by the extensive participation by its staff members in strategic activities of key industry organizations, such as South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE) and Consulting Engineering South Africa (CESD). “Our staff have also amassed a massive haul of industry awards on an annual basis in the past 20 years, a direct result of our focus on continuous development and training,” adds Mkhacane.
Mkhacane believes that the company is prepared for an inevitable future dominated by technological development which is bound to challenge current traditions as part of the fourth industrial revolution. “We are honing our skills to better respond to clients’ needs going into the future. We also focus on developing young talent to take the company forward in line with technological demands and future automation or virtual operations,” says Mkhacane.
