How to Choose an SEO Company in South Africa (2026 Checklist)
If you run a small or growing South African business, you’ve probably had the calls and emails already. Every SEO company in South Africa promises page one, and most proposals look the same. If you’ve been burned by an agency before, it’s even harder to tell who will bring in enquiries and who will just send you a monthly report full of graphs.
We’re Lead Legends, a boutique, owner-led digital marketing agency in Cape Town. We work with B2B and service-based businesses whose owners know their buyers search online but don’t have time to manage marketing themselves. Through our SEO and AEO service for South African businesses, we help them get found on Google and recommended by AI tools like ChatGPT, then turn those searches into enquiries.
This checklist is what we’d want every business owner to ask before signing with any agency, including us. If you’d rather talk it through with someone, book a free chat and we’ll give you an honest view of what your business needs.
How do you choose an SEO company in South Africa?
Choose an SEO company that asks about your business before it quotes, explains exactly what it will do each month, reports on enquiries rather than just rankings, covers AI search as well as Google, and lets you speak to the person doing the work. Avoid anyone who guarantees page one or can’t show you results from businesses like yours.
The ten checks below go into each of these in more detail.
What is an SEO company?
An SEO company is a business that makes your website easier to find in search engines. It researches what your buyers search for, improves your website so Google can read and trust it, writes content that answers those searches, and tracks the results. A good South African SEO agency also covers local search (Google Maps) and, more and more, AI search, so your business shows up when someone asks ChatGPT or Gemini who to hire.
If you’re new to SEO altogether, our guide to what SEO optimisation involves covers the basics first.
What does an SEO specialist do?
An SEO specialist is the person who does the hands-on work: keyword research, on-page changes, technical fixes, content planning and reporting. Some work as freelancers, others work inside an agency. When you hire an SEO company, the question that matters is which specialist will work on your account, and how much of their time you’ll get.
The checklist: 10 things to check before you hire an SEO company
1. Do they ask about your business before they quote?
A good SEO company wants to know how you make money, who your ideal clients are and what you’ve tried before. If you get a price within minutes of filling in a form, you’re being sold a template, not a strategy built for your market.
Ask: “What do you need to know about my business before you can put a plan together?”
2. Can they explain what they’ll do each month?
You should be able to see exactly what you’re paying for: how many articles, which technical fixes, what local work, and how often you’ll hear from them. Vague promises like “ongoing optimisation” make it impossible to tell whether the work was done.
Ask: “What will you deliver in the first three months, and how will I see it?”
3. Do they report on enquiries, not just rankings?
Rankings and traffic look good in a report, but they don’t pay the bills. The right partner connects their work to calls, contact forms and quote requests, and explains the numbers clearly.
Ask: “Can I see an example of a monthly report you send clients?”
4. Do they cover AI search as well as Google?
Your buyers aren’t only typing into Google any more. Many now ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity for recommendations, or read the AI answer at the top of Google. Answer engine optimisation (AEO) helps your business show up in those answers. Many agencies don’t offer it yet, or sell it as an expensive extra.
Ask: “How do you help my business get mentioned in AI tools?”
5. Who will do the work, and can you speak to them?
At large agencies, you can end up talking to an account manager who passes messages to a team you never meet. Freelancers give you direct access, but have limited time and skills. Find out who plans your strategy, who writes your content, and whether you can reach them when you have a question.
Ask: “Who will work on my account day to day?”
6. Do they understand local search in South Africa?
If you serve particular cities or suburbs, you need local SEO services that understand South African search: your Google Business Profile, local pages, reviews, and the way people here phrase their searches. An agency that only works with overseas clients may miss what your local buyers type.
Ask: “How would you help me show up in the areas I serve?”
7. Can they show you results from businesses like yours?
Case studies tell you more than any sales pitch. Look for real examples, ideally from businesses of a similar size or industry, with clear before-and-after results and a timeline.
Ask: “Can you share a case study from a business like mine?”
8. Are they honest about timelines and guarantees?
Nobody controls Google’s results or what AI tools recommend. An SEO company that guarantees page one, or promises results in 30 days, is either guessing or using shortcuts that can get your site penalised. A trustworthy partner tells you what they control and gives you a realistic view of what to expect.
Ask: “What can you control, and what can’t you promise?”
9. Do you approve the work before it goes live?
Content published on your website speaks for your business. You should see the plan, the article topics and the finished pieces before anything is published, so the content sounds like you and gets your facts right.
Ask: “Will I sign off on content before it’s published?”
10. Does their pricing match the work?
Very cheap SEO usually means something has to give, while a high price doesn’t guarantee quality either. Compare what’s included, not just the monthly fee. Our guide on what SEO costs in South Africa shows typical price ranges and what a good package should include, so you can judge the quotes you receive.
Ask: “What’s included in the fee, and what would cost extra?”
How Lead Legends measures up against this checklist
We wrote this checklist because we’d be happy to be judged on it. Here’s how we work:
We learn your business first. Every plan starts with a conversation about your goals, your ideal clients and what you’ve tried before. Then we audit your website, your search and AI visibility, and your competitors. We don’t publish a price list, because we don’t quote before we understand your business.
You know what you’re getting. You receive a clear plan and the article topics before any work starts, and nothing goes live until you’ve approved it.
Enquiries, not vanity numbers. Each monthly report shows what we did, what moved and the enquiries it brought in, with no jargon.
Google and AI search together. AEO is part of every Lead Legends SEO plan, not an add-on.
You talk to the person doing the work. We’re small and owner-led, so there are no layers between you and the person planning and writing your content.
Built for South African businesses. We know local search, from suburbs to provinces, and we write in the way your customers search.
Honest about results. We’ll never guarantee page one or an AI mention. We’ll tell you what we control, and show you what it achieved.
Proof it works
A B2B client in fractional HR came to us almost invisible on Google, even though their buyers research there before getting in touch. We refreshed their website, fixed the technical SEO and added search-focused blog content. Pages started ranking after the first month, warm leads came in as soon as they did, and within six months a number of keywords were on page one. Read the fractional HR SEO case study.

Who we’re the right SEO company for
We work best with owners of small and growing South African businesses, especially B2B and service-based companies, who:
know their buyers search online before getting in touch, but aren’t showing up
have a website that looks fine but doesn’t bring in enquiries
have paid an agency before and couldn’t see what it delivered
don’t have time to write content or manage SEO on top of running the business
want a marketing partner without the cost of a full-time hire
If you need leads this week, SEO on its own may not be the right first step, and we’ll tell you so. Because we also run paid ads, build websites and manage email and social, we can bring in enquiries now while your SEO builds for the long term.
Ready to find the right SEO partner?
Choosing an SEO company is a decision you’ll live with for months, so take your time and ask the questions above. If you’d like to see how we’d approach your business, tell us where you are and where you want to be. We’ll show you where your opportunities are and follow up with a proposal that fits.
