Attempt on Land Rover Convoy World Record at Landy Festival in May

The South African Land Rover community will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the biggest convoy of Land Rover drivers at this years’ annual Landy Festival.

The Landy Festival takes place on the 10th and 11th May (Saturday and Sunday) at the Soetdoring Vakansieplaas game farm in Vereeniging, different from the previous two years. 

“At this stage we will be chasing a record set in the UK for a convoy of 349 Land Rovers. The venue is completely enclosed and the convoy will not be required to drive on any public roads. This will make the attempt easier than in 2012 when the convoy made use of public roads which made the attempt more difficult,” said Craig Dutton, founder of the website MyLandRoverHasASoul.com and organiser of the event www.landyfestival.co.za . The attempt will take place on Sunday 11th May. 

The Landy Festival is a weekend gathering of Land Rover owners and enthusiasts who travel from as far as Windhoek and Cape Town to Gauteng, to camp and enjoy the activities and festivities offered. 

“The Bush Mall of exhibitors will showcase products and services related to Land Rovers and the outdoor lifestyle that Land Rover represents. The event is fully endorsed by Land Rover South Africa and supported by members of the Land Rover club of South Africa and Land Rover dealerships countrywide,” said Mr Dutton.

“Land Rover owners subscribe to the notion that you don’t buy a Land Rover, you buy a lifestyle. The Landy Festival is fast becoming an event not to be missed among Land Rover enthusiasts,” he said.

The new venue will have a 4×4 track offering everything from ascents, descents, soft sand, water holes, axle twisters and off-camber sections. All on a scenic 2,5 km long trail. The trail consists of no less than 15 obstacles on a loop that, in itself, is adventurous to drive.

For those not too confident on the more technical obstacles, they can be bypassed and attempt the obstacles that suit their skill levels. The 4×4 track is free of charge for Expo visitors and campers.

The Landy Festival of 2012 and 2013 were huge successes with all available camping sold out at both events. The 2012 event drew 3 000 visitors while the 2013 event drew 4 500.

Attractions at the next event will include the entertaining WWCC (World Wheel Changing Championship). In addition there will be food stalls, a kids zone, entertainment, drinks and camping facilities. 

All entries for children 12 and under are free. Day visitors pay R50 for an adult and R25 for teenagers. Camping in the main camp is R150 for adults and R80 for teenagers and the field camp is R130 for an adult and R60 for teenagers. The entry into the bush convoy costs R40 per vehicle.
