Sapphire Coast Launches Inclusive Beach Programme So Everyone Can Enjoy the Festive Season Fun
Submitted by: Agnes MatladiThe end-of-year holiday season is just around the corner, and there’s no better destination than the Sapphire Coast in KwaZulu-Natal. This year, alongside the popular Sapphire Sizzling Summer programme, Amanzimtoti Main Beach will host the Water Sweets ’24 games, an inclusive initiative for disabled holidaymakers – all free of charge!
“We are delighted to continue expanding our inclusive tourism offering with the launch of the Water Sweets ’24 games hosted by Wheels on Waves in conjunction with Sapphire Coast Tourism,” commented Romy Wenzel of Sapphire Coast Tourism. “This will run alongside our popular Sapphire Sizzling Summer programme, which includes free seaside games, giveaways, and activities for our Sapphire Coast visitors. It’s set to be a fantastic festive season!”
Inclusive Tourism in Action
Reece Smith (18) of Rolling with Reece is working with his father, Wesley (43), to make Amanzimtoti an international destination for disabled visitors. Reece, himself a quadriplegic with a love for the ocean, believes that everyone should have access to this incredible resource. Through their Wheels on Waves programme, the father-and-son team is raising funds to purchase Sandcruiser Beach Wheelchairs to help visitors with disabilities experience the water.
Water Sweets ’24 Games Highlights
Running from 20 to 23 December 2024, the Water Sweets ’24 games at Amanzimtoti Main Beach will invite both able-bodied and disabled holidaymakers to engage in beach activities together. Planned activities include:
- Beach Arm Golf
- Fishing
- Seated Volleyball
- Sports Quiz
A standout event is Danito, named after an inspiring young man who, despite being completely blind, competed in the Midmar Mile only six months after first learning to swim. The game involves being blindfolded and throwing a hacky sack onto a scoreboard, with the highest scorer after three throws declared the winner.
The games will wrap up with a Santa Surprise Visit, a festive closing ceremony, and an afterparty on the beach!
Promoting Inclusive Tourism
“Inclusive tourism is a major growth market with approximately 10% of the global population experiencing some form of disability,” explained Wesley Smith. “Inclusive tourism is more than just a ramp and parking near the entrance. Through the Water Sweets ’24 games, we want to make the holiday enjoyable for all disabled individuals.”
Sapphire Sizzling Summer Programme
The Sapphire Sizzling Summer programme will run alongside the Water Sweets Games from 20 to 23 December and resume from 27 to 31 December at Amanzimtoti Main Beach. Visitors can look forward to beach Olympics, family-friendly games, music, prizes, and exciting giveaways.
Sponsorship and Promotional Opportunities
Sapphire Coast Tourism invites local businesses to participate in the Sapphire Sizzling Summer and Water Sweets ’24 games. This is an ideal opportunity to engage with a large audience by offering promotional items and activities. Businesses can also provide hampers, prizes, or vouchers for giveaways.
Community-minded businesses can also explore sponsorship opportunities:
- Title Sponsor: R48,000, which includes naming rights and extensive marketing exposure.
- Beach Arm Golf Sponsor: R10,000, with branding opportunities and marketing inclusion.
