JMPD officer’s death a major loss
Written by: MyPressportal Team Save to InstapaperLast night, two JMPD officers were killed by a drunk driver during a stop and search operation which was conducted on Witkoppen road.
He was allegedly caught driving 3 times over the alcohol limit. The 43 year old motorist knocked down and killed two female officers aged 35 and 46.
It is with great sadness that officers whose duty it is to uphold and enforce the law in order to protect motorists on the road, had their lives taken for the very reason they were on duty, to catch those not adhering to the rules of the road. I would like to send my heart-felt condolences to the affected families, we have lost our colleagues in an unacceptable manner.
Incidents of this nature are of a great concern and are on the rise. I appeal to motorists not to drive when under the influence of alcohol, this wouldn’t have happened if one was vigilant, observant and complying with the Rules of the Road.
Joburg can be a safer city if all motorists play an active role in being responsible for their behavior on the City’s roads; and moreover are accountable for their transgressions. Driving under the influence of alcohol is one of the major challenges that makes our roads unsafe. In the near future, it will take 3 years to recruit, select, train and appoint JMPD officers, and as this is a lengthy process, losing just one officer is not only an immense loss to a family, but also a setback in the City’s continuity and sustainability going forward.
The Traffic Enforcements Agencies play a pivotal role in safeguarding motorists by enforcing the Rules of the Roads; therefore motorists need to play their part in ensuring that officers are protected whilst performing their law enforcement duties.
