Important Beach Safety Tips for the KZN South Coast This Summer
Submitted by: Agnes MatladiThe KZN South Coast, boasting the highest number of Blue Flag beaches in KwaZulu-Natal, is a premier destination for seaside holidays, especially during the festive season. To ensure visitors have a safe and enjoyable experience, the South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise (SCTIE) shares essential beach safety tips.
Dr Vusumuzi Sibiya, CEO of SCTIE, highlights the region’s appeal:
“The KZN South Coast is home to three Marine Protected Areas, two world-class dive sites, and the highest number of tidal pools in the province. We urge all visitors to follow these vital beach safety tips provided by the National Sea Rescue Institute [NSRI].”
9 Vital Beach Safety Tips
1. Swim Only Where Lifeguards Are on Duty
Lifeguards are stationed at selected beaches during specific times. Always check for their presence and follow their guidance, especially regarding rip tides and currents.
2. Swim Between Designated Flags
Lifeguarded beaches will have yellow and red flags marking safe swimming zones. Stay between these flags, and signal for help if needed.
3. Avoid Alcohol Before Swimming
Alcohol impairs judgment and increases the risk of drowning. Swim only when sober.
4. Never Swim Alone
Always swim with a buddy to ensure someone is available to assist in emergencies.
5. Supervise Children Closely
Adults must watch children at all times near the ocean. Avoid distractions such as mobile phones to ensure continuous supervision.
6. Call for Help if Needed
If you see someone in distress:
- Alert a lifeguard or call 112 for emergency assistance.
- Use an NSRI Pink Rescue Buoy or flotation device to assist while waiting for help.
- Attempt rescues only if confident in your swimming abilities and with a flotation device.
7. Avoid Inflatable Toys at the Beach
Inflatables like lilos and lightweight boats can easily drift offshore due to wind and currents. Use them only in swimming pools under supervision.
8. Be Aware of Rip Currents
Rip currents can pull swimmers out to sea at speeds of up to 2 metres per second. To avoid danger:
- Swim only where lifeguards are present.
- If caught in a rip, stay calm and conserve energy. Swim out of the current diagonally or let it carry you beyond the breakers before attempting to return.
9. Watch Out for Spring Tides
Spring tides during full and new moons result in higher high tides and stronger rip currents. Exercise caution during these periods.
