DEFINITIVE VINEYARD GUIDE LEADS STUDENTS THROUGH THE VINEYARDS

Submitted by: Save to Instapaper
{pp}It is believed that the first vines were planted in the Stone Age, sparking a long and colourful history of vine cultivation. In 2009, South Africa celebrated the 350th anniversary of the first vinification by Jan van Riebeeck at the Cape. It is therefore fitting that 2009 should also mark the launch of a new definitive guide to Grape Vines for winemaking in South Africa.

On 18 March 2009, Cheviot Publishing launched Prof. PG Goussard’s highly anticipated title: GRAPE CULTIVARS FOR WINE PRODUCTION IN SOUTH AFRICA, in the historic town of Stellenbosch, heart of the Cape Winelands. Says the author: “A thorough knowledge of cultivars is essential for vineyard establishment and cultivation, vinification and marketing strategies. In addition to the reliable identification of wine grape cultivars, the values associated with their characteristics, cultivation preferences and cultivation needs cannot be overemphasized – particularly in South African conditions, which are characteristically diverse regarding soil types and climatic conditions. Without this knowledge, it would not be possible to easily make meaningful cultivar choices for specific regions and terrains, or scientifically grounded implementation and manipulation of vineyard practices that keep input costs under control without sacrificing quality and quantity.” In his inspiring publication, author Prof. PG Goussard explores the complex science of ampelography, combining decades of research and in-field experience in the South African wine industry. The easy-to-read and easy-to-understand approach and vast amount of comparative detail, makes GRAPE CULTIVARS an essential companion for both the novice reader and the vineyard specialist. GRAPE CULTIVARS features:

  • An expert overview on ampelography for cultivar identification,
  • International cultivar names spellings,
  • Detailed analysis on more than sixty red and white wine grape cultivars,
  • Superb full colour photographs of shoot tips, leaves and grape bunches for easy identification,
  • Specialist advice on cultivation for quality wine production,
  • At-a-glance panels providing comparative detail on origin, growth and yield,
  • Highlights internationally recognised synonyms.
  • “New” and “alternative” cultivars with reference to more recent imports Publisher Elmari Swart of Cheviot Publishing, a former student of Prof.

Goussard notes: “I am exceptionally proud of this project. Prof Goussard is one of my mentors, and his years of dedication to this subject field and to his students have been inspirational to many in the wine industry. This long-awaited book is a visual and reading delight”. The title provides an up-to-date, in-depth reference work for all students in the fields of Viticulture and Oenology. In addition, this publication has significant value as a reference text for viticulturists and oenologists, consultants, producers, marketers, connoisseurs and wine lovers … in fact, anyone who has a passion for, and interest in, vines and wine. GRAPE CULTIVARS FOR WINE PRODUCTION IN SOUTH AFRICA is available in Afrikaans and English!!
