Clean sweep for Saxenburg Private Collection Cabernet Sauvignon at London International Wine
Submitted by: Cathy Retief-NeilSaxenburg Private Collection Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 caused a stir at the IWSC in London this week, when it walked off with not only the prestigious Gold Medal in the Cabernet Sauvignon category, but also with the Best in Class Medal and the Warren Winiarski Trophy for Cabernet Sauvignon.
The Saxenburg Private Collection Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 took the Gold Medal in the Stellenbosch category, then went on to win the Best in Class and ultimately, the Winiarski Trophy. There were over 6 000 wines from various countries around the world this year. Wines were judged in two stages: A professional blind tasting by a panel of elite international judges, and a detailed chemical and microbiological analysis, that makes the competition unique as all medal winners are subject to a stringent analysis, prior to releasing the results! Adding to his ever-increasing list of awards and trophies, winemaker Nico van der Merwe said: "This is arguably the highest accolade in the world for Cabernet Sauvignon." Well done, Nico! What makes this achievement even more rewarding is that, as far back as 1991, the Cabernet Sauvignon was what put Saxenburg on the map, while in later years, it was Nico's passion for Shiraz that brought forth the national and international recognition of the farm's flagship wine. Nico has been winemaker at Saxenburg since 1990. "It is a truly noteworthy achievement to see Saxenburg's Cabernet Sauvignon back where it belongs - achieving international recognition," says Nico of the award winning wine that is cloaked in its brand new slimline French bottle and sporting Saxenburg;s new cardinal red, black and gold colours. The fruit was selected from 15.5 hectares of homegrown Saxenburg vineyard - three different vineyards planted with three different clones - near Stellenbosch and was matured in 300 litre French oak barrels, of which 40% of the barrels were new. This Cabernet opens with a powerful, intense aroma of blackcurrant and cassis fruit. The wine is ready for drinking, however we suggest it be served at room temperature (between 16ºC to 18ºC) and decanted immediately before serving, for maximum enjoyment. The wine can be cellared for a further 8 or 9 years. Nico has been invited to attend the IWSC Banquet at Old Billingsgate in London on 31 October 2006, where he will be handed the coveted Warren Winiarski Trophy. Even more encouraging was that many other Saxenburg's wines won medals at the IWSC.
