The National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa has opened a new chapter for Xhosa rapper Lolo Vandal, who recently graduated from its Cyber Security Studies programme.
The training gave Lolo practical, accredited knowledge that reshaped how he thinks about his work, his online presence, and the responsibilities of creatives who operate in a digital world.
During his time at the institute, Lolo; also known as Zuxole Ngetu, acquired essential skills in protecting digital assets, managing online identities and recognising cyber threats. What began as technical instruction quickly became a broader education in digital professionalism: how to secure unreleased material, safeguard collaborators’ information, and preserve intellectual property in an era when creative work is shared and stored online.
Building Digital Awareness and Responsibility
The course also deepened Lolo’s understanding of the relationship between creative practice and public policy. He learned how government systems and institutional frameworks must evolve to protect citizens and cultural workers, and he gained clarity on the kinds of policy changes leaders should prioritise to strengthen national cyber resilience.
This perspective has inspired him to think beyond his own career and consider how cautious, informed individuals can lead by example in their communities.
Empowering Youth Through Digital Literacy
More than technical competence, the NEMISA experience reinforced the value of education for South Africa’s youth. Lolo now speaks passionately about the importance of digital literacy for young people who spend much of their lives online.
He believes that when creatives invest in learning, they not only protect their work but also raise the standard of professionalism across the media landscape.
Applying Skills in a Digital-First Industry
The practical, hands-on nature of the programme meant Lolo could apply what he learned immediately. From secure file management to critical evaluation of online threats, the tools he gained are already influencing how he produces, markets, and collaborates.
His journey demonstrates how targeted training can turn everyday digital habits into deliberate, protective practices.
Bridging Creativity and Technology
Lolo Vandal’s story is a testament to the National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa’s role in bridging creative talent and technical expertise. By equipping artists with cybersecurity knowledge, the institute helps ensure that South African creatives can thrive safely in the digital economy.
Lolo’s graduation is not just a personal milestone; it is an example of how education can empower artists to protect their craft, influence public conversations, and lead with informed caution.
