Modernisation of Pemba Airport Begins as Zanzibar Invests in Major Infrastructure and Tourism Growth

The modernisation and expansion of Zanzibar’s Pemba Airport is officially underway. The project will include upgrading the terminal, runway and main access road.

Zanzibar recently handed over the construction site to Spain-based contractor Propav Infrastructure. The new airport will feature a modern passenger terminal, a 2,4km runway and facilities accommodating long-haul aircraft used on international routes.

According to The Citizen, the cost projected by Zanzibar’s Ministry of Infrastructure for both projects is around US$263,3 million (R4,5 billion). The development is scheduled for completion within three years.

Once operational, the airport is expected to have capacity for 330 000 passengers annually – up from the current 100 000 domestic passengers.
