Rosa Kruger works to preserve South Africa’s old vines and viticultural heritage

For more than two decades, Rosa Kruger has worked alongside South Africa’s vineyards, building a reputation as one of the country’s most respected viticulturists. As founder and chairperson of the Old Vine Project, she has been instrumental in preserving South Africa’s oldest vineyards and championing the people who care for them. Her work has shown the value of old vines and the knowledge they offer about resilience and sustainability.
We asked Rosa a few quick-fire questions about what wine heritage means to her, and why old vineyards matter.
What does wine heritage mean to you personally?
A reflection of where we come from. Who planted the first wine grapes? How did our political, social and economic history affect and steer this history? Who imported the first vines and varieties, and who physically planted these vines? Were they planted by slaves? From where? How did their culture influence the wine world of South Africa?
Why is it important for the South African wine industry to protect its old vineyards and viticultural heritage?
Because old vines might have answers in our continuous battle with heat, drought, wind, stress and climate change. They have shown resilience and have sometimes lived for 120 years. What made them so strong?
What do you believe is South Africa’s greatest wine heritage asset?
Our people.
What is the most important lesson that old vineyards can teach future generations of winegrowers and winemakers?
Patience is a virtue.
What gives you hope for the future of South Africa’s wine heritage?
The people who work in the vineyards have a wonderful affection for their work in the vineyards. There are always a smile, laughter and positivity, even on a very cold day in winter or a really hot day in summer.
